I had jury duty today.
I didn't get picked, thank God, because it was a criminal case with a guy accused of sexually molesting a child. They discharged me and when I got to my office and mentioned the name of the guy to my assistant, she said he was an infamous pedophile in the area with many priors. I have to report again next month and I'm hoping for a slip and fall!

1. I don't think I could serve on a jury for that...
it would really bother me - and as the mom of a little girl, I don't think I could really consider someone innocent until proven guilty in a situation like that.

2. I DID get picked for exactly a case as you described.
It was such a disappointing experience, I really don't even like to write about it.

A man had tried to abduct a male boy who resembled a female. It was a hung jury, because several jurors did not understand the difference between a "Reasonable" and a "Possible" doubt.

It was so horrendous to watch the boy testify, and it was such a disgrace to see my fellow jurors' complete lack of ability to reason analytically about this case as to why there was no motive for the boy to lie.

I had always wanted to be on a jury, but after that experience, I never ever want to do it again.

6. Similar experience..
But it ended with the guy being found innocent because a couple of guys convinced the jury
that it was "not worth ruining a man's life" and "all part of growing up". Unbelievable. I held out, but was out voted. So frustrating. Even the judge was upset when the verdict
was given. Haven't served since. Haven't had much faith in juries after that episode. z

3. My organist had to report for federal jury duty today. She's hoping
she'll get called for the Rezko case, to be a part of history. I've never been on a jury.

Good for you, for doing your duty, however creepy :hi:

4. Me too. Jury duty today...
...I was in a room full of about 100. They called about 60 and then, an hour later, cut the rest of us free (this is NYC). I secretly hoped to get picked for a trial like yours. I guess I'm not what would be called an "objective" juror. Luckily, they won't have to deal with me for another four years.

8:30 in the morning ( by train ) so I have to be up at at least 5:00 a.m. It's my first time, and I'm not looking forward to it...I'm thinking of burning a big red X in my forehead and claiming to be a Manson family member. What a pain in the ass this will be

9. I always tell them I'm biased.
Because I am!!! I also used to be a court reporter.

The last time I was called, I went down there and I knew the judge and both lawyers (no problem with that -- no bias against them).

I told them I was biased against insurance companies, because I was sued for a declaratory judgment by one, which is true. They shut me up quickly and struck me from the venire (jury panel) for cause.

I also took a copy of "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" hoping that they would see that and think I was too radical.

11. My father served on a sequestered jury
many years ago. The case was a baby who died of abuse and neglect.

I don't know how he did it. I would have been so sickened by the case that I could not have sat in the jury box.

13. I've had three different kinds: municipal, federal, and grand
Initially I hated having to do it, but it was interesting and now I'm kind of glad I got to do it. Grand jury duty was kind of depressing, though--lots of cases of drug trafficking and child molestation. :(

One that was kind of funny in an "I can't believe we get to hear a case on this" way was when we had to decide whether to indict someone for horse thievery. (FTR, we did.)

14. why do you have to report again?
I thought if you showed up and they discharge you, you've done your duty for at least 3 years...

15. It's a pain driving into downtown Dallas.
But I don't mind getting called for jury duty. I've been called a couple of times, but the one jury I sat for was for Aggrevated Assault (21 yr old male shot a man in the face, it's a miracle the bullet only grazed the side of his cheekbone). Those 3 days exposed me to a whole 'nother universe. If I ever get picked to serve again, I hope I get a case that is as interesting.
