1. It's like that "Day After Tomorrow" film, except the strange weather isn't destroying landmarks |
|
Why do asteroids always land in Paris, on the Sphinx, or plow straight through the Chrysler Building?
Wait, does global warming even cause asteroids to crash onto earth?

10. Imagine the guts it took to do the second approach. |
|
Been in similar situation, but not at that much crosswind. Landing at San Jose during Santa Annas.
First approach just sucked. Winds much higher that reported. Initiated go around at 100'. Next approach..."Oh shit." A LOT more crab and kicked it out just a few feet above touchdown. Whew.
Van to hotel. Change into civvies. Last one into the bar is a rotten egg.
Wonder why he didn't divert to his alternate. Wind just as bad there? Low on fuel? Anyway, good job.

12. Lots of questions that have been ignored, like |
|
Didn't anyone notice that the cross winds were gusting that high?
and
What made the pilot think the winds were going to drop off by the time he took the second approach?
and
Did he just get lucky on the second approach?
and
Once he banged the wing, was a second approach his only choice?

16. That answers one question, but why wasn't the flight directed to that runway originally? |
|
I have the impression the German tower control poeple just aren't experienced with these conditions and don't recognize the hazards.

18. The *plane* was traveling at 155 mph, not the wind |
|
Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 07:46 PM by KamaAina
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23447309Airline spokesman Wolfgang Weber said the plane was traveling at 155 mph when it was rocked by wind during its landing attempt....
(This version CORRECTS Corrects that plane was traveling at 155 mph; that was not the speed of the wind. Moving on general news and financial services. AP Video.)edit: link

The text said gale force winds. A strong gale is 76-87 mph and a whole gale is 88-102. At 120 it is officially hurricane force or Force 12 on the Beaufort scale.
Still pretty sporty any way you slice it.

The U.S. Government's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration defines a gale as 34 to 47 knots (39 miles per hour to 54 miles per hour) of sustained surface winds.
