2. I don't get it
Is it bad that they are selling it? Is it good?

And why do "record collectors" have to compete against someone who is, in fact, selling a record? Seems you need each other.

5. That's a pretty serious starting price for a damn record, too.
It might well be worth it, but still...yeow!

6. It is a lot!
One could have 3 original Rabrrrrrr paintings for that price.

If it were me, I'd rather have the paintings than an expensive record from a band I've never heard of that would, perhaps, end up getting brioken at some point anyway. Plus, I'm sure one could download the music from the 'net. :-)

I value my Rabrrrrrr original artwork MUCH more than an album. :-)

10. it's because of the exchange rate
45 RPM in Britain is like 33-1/3 RPM in the US.

12. not anymore
I have at least 30 of those. Ever since CDs have become the dominant format vinyl has quit the 33-12", 47-7" format. Now both sizes come on both speeds about equally, and all sorts of weird sizes are made (I have 10" and 6" records), as well as all sorts of colors (only about half the records I have are black)

16. And you're still missing one
:-)

Thanks for liking the joke. We used to tease the Canadians in college all the time like that (in the 80s, when their currency wasn't worth much compared to the US).

14. To make rent recently I had to sell some rare recs....
I had a 7" of "When the Tigers Broke Free," a song never released on an album, from the film "The Wall," by Pink Floyd, in a gatefold pic sleeeve....VG+, and I had to sell the damn thing just to stay under a roof in Bush's America.....I had that record since I was 11 years old!!! I wanted it to be an heirloom....

I had a few other cool ones I had to let go of....."Heliocentic Worlds of Sun Ra, Vols. one and two," STILL SEALED, original pressings....oy gevalt!

One of the NEW areas of collecting music that's becoming popular is original CD pressings of certain albums...usually. the very first editions of a lot of records were poorly mastered, had cropped artwork, and were just lamely packaged all around. These CDs are now worth some bucks!

And hang on to any weird/rare/odd cassettes you may have. Something tells me cassettes are going to be the new hot collector's market in a few years.

As for Belle and Sebastian....Bleaaaahhh, I hate them. I wouldn't pay a dollar for that record, no matter how rare it is.

15. To be rare that is an extremely rare copy of that record
TRUST me. Shoegazers will pay a lot for Belle and Sebastian stuff.

18. Sullen, shy twenty-somethings
Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 10:12 AM by RandomKoolzip
who wear sweaters and usually live off a trust fund....I have no idea why, but they love sullen, shy music too. And vocalists who whisper.

Originally, the term referred to groups like Ride, The Charlatans, Lush, The Cranes, and the original incarnation of Blur, and the sound was basically this: a monotonous drumbeat copied from "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Stones minus the maracas and bongos, overlaid with "ethereal" guitar sounds and whispery, "sexy" vocals. You really couldn't tell any of the bands apart, and they all sounded like they had the same drummer. And they all looked at their shoes while perfoming, hence the term, "Shoegazer." Essentially, the pose here was to act as fey as possible while pretending to be on drugs. Brits and wealthy urban teens in the US gobbled this racket up back in the early 90's.

Now, the term applies to college kids who try to act as Byronically wasted and insufferably shy and sensitive as possible. The pretentious, dissipated sounds of Belle and Sebastian are a perfect fit. It used to be Lush that I considered the worst band in the world; now it's those wastrels.

In essense, all the groups here were looking to perfom a music on rock instruments that didn't rock; the idea of rocking itself was gauche and offensive to such delicate, poetic souls. Whenever I used to run into Shoegazing fans, I'd crank the AC-DC and watch them recoil in horror.

20. I have a whole boatload of "limited edition of 1000" records...
...that ain't worth a damn (monetarily). "The Room Isn't Big Enough," by Ego Summit, perfect example. Great record, historically important (for Columbus music fans) band, Rep can't give 'em away.

Too bad I don't have any limited edition pressings by overhyped college radio wussies, I could make a mint!

21. Yeah, I got the same problem with my collection of
Connecticut Hardcore 7"ers. I bought just about every straightedge band's 7" when I lived in CT, and they always said things like "limited edition of 500" on them. I've tried selling them and get nothing but blank looks....unless a band member went on to bigger things, like the Vatican Commandos 7", featuring a young Moby on guitar. Maybe in 20 years they'll be worth 5 bucks each. (And musically, they suck like a hurricane, too!)
