31. The title for one; the lyrics for the other.
And it is not unreasonable to suppose that people sing and write about what they know. Most love songs are sung by one gender about the other because that is what most people experience. Bowie and Mercury see it a bit differently.

37. You're My Best Friend was written by bassist John Deacon ...

As a gay man and a classic rock fan, I find nothing in All The Young Dudes that would imply anything sexual.

38. and?
The lyrics are such that it always seemed to me that he may have been singing about a gay love interest. It's vague enough so that it doesn't necessarily mean that, but it can.

I didn't say either song was necessarily sexual. My understanding from listening to gay advocates is that being gay is a perspecive, preference and self-identity, not necessarily a sexual practice. If I'm wrong about that, let me know.

Frankly, I am a little resentful at this attempt to draw me out as some kind of bigot because two songs remind me of homosexuality.

the point I'm making is that a person's sexuality isn't always relevant to a song.

64. All the Young Dudes was written by Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople
Don't know his sexual persuasion, though.

And you're right, musicians are notorious gender benders. Famous womanizer Mick Jagger had an affair with Bowie, while Rod Stewart DEFINITELY had a fling with Elton John (they used to call each other "Phyllis" and "Sharon"). So gay musicians like the Judas Priest guy or Freddie (one of my all time favourites) can appeal to a straight audience and vice-versa.

Or since I still have the CD (ancient technology such as it is) I could've looked at the composer's credits in the liner notes. Thanx for the clarification.

Bowie from that period was so amazing! Especially Diamond Dogs CD--Rebel Rebel has the best guitar riff eveh!

57. Good list, but a few I disagree with and my substitutes
You could replace

32. Sylvester “You Make Me Feel Mighty Real”

with "Do You Wanna Funk With Me" (for the longest time I thought he was saying "F*ck"), although "Mighty Real" is a good one.

25. Barry Manilow “Copacabana”

with "You're Looking Hot Tonight", a song Manilow did in the 80's that was a big hit in the clubs.

20. Dolly Parton “9 to 5” (Don't know how this made the list)

with "Potential New Boyfriend" (another 80's classic) or "Baby I'm Burning"

A few they missed that could have made the list;

"I'm So Hot for You (And You're So Hot for Me)"
"I Need a Man in My Life"
"So Many Men (So Little Time)" (How did they miss THAT one?)
"Take Me Home"
"It Feels Like I'm in Love"
"Where is My Man?" by the immortal Eartha Kitt
"I Need a Man" by the Eurythmics
Anything by the Supremes

...If I have to hear Plant screeching one more time about picking up twinks on the Sunset Strip, I'm gonna call the authorities.

"From the window of your rented limousine, I saw your pretty blue eyes
One day soon youre gonna reach sixteen, painted lady in the city of lies.

Oh, do you know my name? do I look the same
You know Im the one you want. I must be the one you need, yeah

Clutching pages from your teenage dream in the lobby of the hotel paradise
Through the circus of the l.a. queens. how fast your learn the downhill side

Oh, do you know my name? do I look the same
You know Im the one you want. I must be the one you need,.

Lips like cherries and the brow of a queen, come on, flash it in my eyes
Said you dug me since you were thirteen, then you giggle as you heave and sigh.

Oh, do you know my name? do I look the same
You know Im the one you want. I must be the one you need.

Hours, hours, and the moments in between, oh, baby, I couldnt count the times
The fun of comin, oh the pain in leavin, baby, dry those silver eyes

Oh, do you know my name? do I look the same
You know Im the one you want. I must be the one you need,

Ooh, thats right."

68. Great songwriting in that one too
"All we have to do is take these lies and make them true"

Which sounds to me like being honest with others about who you really are. I love that song.

Wait, they're not gay?

I swore they were....

Oh yeah...I get it...

Never mind

71. Naw. It's Jim Stafford's MY GIRL BILL. You don't find out till the end of the song
Edited on Thu Mar-06-08 10:05 PM by 1monster
that Jim is telling his brother Bill to keep his hands off "My Girl" ....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTeWG38FoyY

Bill walked me to my door last night
And he said, 'Before I go
There's something about our love affair
That I have a right to know
I said, "Let's not stand out here like this
What would the neighbors think
Why don't we just...step inside
And I'll fix us both a drink"

My girl, Bill
My, my, girl, Bill
Can't say enough about the way I feel
About my girl
(My girl, my girl)
My girl, Bill

William's hands were shaking
As he took his glass of wine
And I could see we both felt the same
When his eyes met mine
I said, "'Who we love and why we love
It's hard to understand
So let's just sit here on the couch
And face this, man to man"

My girl, Bill
My, my, girl, Bill
Can't say enough about the way I feel
About my girl
(My girl, my girl)
My girl Bill

Bill, you know we just left her place
And we both know what she said
She doesn't want to see your face
And she wishes you were dead
Now, I know we both love her
And I guess we always will
But you're gonna have to find another
'Cause she's my girl...Bill

My girl, Bill
My, my, girl, Bill
Can't say enough about the way I feel
About my girl
(My girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my little girl
My girl, Bill

My girl, Bill
My, my, girl, Bill
Can't say enough about the way I feel
About my girl
(My girl, my girl)
My girl, Bill

74. Without "It's Raining Men" on there, this list is crap.
That should be #1-10

77. No more Tears should be #1 simply because it's both Babs and Donna together!
I can't bear to listen to that one anymore, but it's Babs and Donna, and it doesn't get any gayer than that.
