When the workers in your office decides to order Chinese food for lunch
Is there a certain fraction of them who feel compelled to chatter in obnoxious faux-Chinese accents for the next hour or so?

Or does this only happen in my office?

6. How fortunate I am to have a front row seat at such cutting edge vaudeville!
Truly an enlightened time to be alive in western Pennsylvania.

15. You're right--I shouldn't disparage the region as a whole
Nor even the entirety of my office. Just a few irrepressible wits who simply can't keep their overwhelming hilarity to themselves.

4. Me so solly, no have flied lice
Hardy har har. I swear it never gets old.

When I managed a sub shop a few years back, I worked with a woman from Hong Kong who was terribly self-conscious about her accent, which had a British tinge to it and was IMO quite charming.

A coworker once made fun of her diction, and she was reduced nearly to tears.

I spoke with her about it shortly afterwards:
Me: Don't let him make you feel bad about yourself. I mean, you speak how many languages? Three?
Her: Five.
Me: And he can barely speak one, so he has no business making fun of how anyone talks.

It seemed to help a little.

Anyway, I cringe every time the Charlie Chan crowd pops up in the office.

8. Are you hiring?
If you need dirty limericks or clever variations of the Brazillions joke, you'll find no one better qualified, I assure you!

17. Perhaps one of them penned this gem:
I had a bunch of Canadian dollars I needed to exchange, so I went to the currency exchange window at the local bank.

Short line.

Just one lady in front of me . . an Asian lady who was trying to exchange yen for dollars and she was a little irritated . . .

She asked the teller, "Why it change?? Yesterday, I get two hunat dolla fo yen. Today I get hunat eighty?? Why it change?"

The teller shrugged his shoulders and said, "Fluctuations" .

The Asian lady says, "Fluc you white people, too".

some of them will be chattering in real Chinese accents, and not just for an hour.

that seems pretty uncool. Are there any Asian- Americans present? Seems like that would be pretty insensitive...

I've never heard anyone do that, but...

Considering we live in a city where you can hear pretty much any accent (well in Oakland, Squirrel Hill or downtown).... you would think they wouldn't do that

13. We're pretty uniformly pasty
And I have to admit that it strikes me as that low-grade, dumbassed racial insensitivity rather than deliberate racist cruelty, if that distinction makes any sense at all. So in daily practice you might not guess that the person is a festering boil of bigotry, but when the opportunity presents itself, it's an oh-so-witty free-for-all.
