the people who understand the roles the best may not look the part.

The show's creators originally wanted Roseanne Barr and Sam Kinnison. (Note, Roseanne eventually had her own show, which had more substance to it... or, rather, retained the substance before becoming a live-action cartoon before MWC had.)

Katey Sagal was genius at it; pity she looked hot.

Ed O'Neill was the only actor NOT to read it like Ralph Kramden; and he was supposed to look like his No MA'AM buddies. (by season 4, the show became cartoonish, and by season 7 it had fewer notes than me on a good day.)
