Anyone here play FFXI?
My girlfriend finally convinced me to try it.

We're on Midgardsormr - I've got a newbie Elvaan Red Mage named Kariza. :hi:

1. I was so addicted.
I put so much work into my character. I was working on the Bard job, a red haired Elvaan female named Lichna on the Alexander server.

I fucking LOVE that game.

When my ex and I broke up though the asshole changed my password and wouldn't give my character back, so now I am patiently waiting to get this job so that I can start again.

Oh my God, the hours and hours of farming, and camping, to make the gil for my gear. I had finally collected my Crow gear and all the elemental staffs, and some other little goodies, and then lost it all. :(

13. That's an assy thing for him to do.
When my ex and I broke up, she waited for me to decide whether I was willing to pay the money to shift my Everquest character over to a new account before she did anything with it.

20. That sort of thing is why I refuse to share accounts with anyone.
If I can't afford to pay for it myself, I don't play it. I'm also not paying for anyone else's accounts. I've just seen waaaay too much drama ensue in the aftermath of breakups, and characters represent years of work.

22. it was definitely a mistake I won't make again
We shared passwords and he paid for my account, but had he just taken his card info off I would have been able to pay for it on my own. We shared passwords because we shared a lot of our equipment and held onto each others items and whatnot so it just made it easier when one or the other wasn't around to be able to get onto each others mules.
At the point of time we were talking about getting married and all that so I didn't really consider that we may break up and I could lose all of my hard work.

23. I would recommend Guild Wars in that case.
No monthly fee.

Unfortunately it also gets pretty boring for those of us who like a little complication. And if you're the type to like FFXI, then I'm guessing you don't go for the simpler stuff. :P

26. Yep. It was fun at first.
But it didn't take long for me to realize that it was just going to be a repeat of a repeat of a repeat of a repeat by the time I got past the little intro part.

Funny thing is, I got the game because a friend of mine bought it and discovered the same thing. So he gave me his copy. :P

switch to shiva. your server is dying and might be merged with one of the others supposedly...

i'm on shiva. before you try red mage, do white mage, black mage, and theif.

most red mage spells you get as white or black mage, and theif will give you higher evasion and a good way to make loot.

edit:

currently: elvaan white mage/summoner 61/30

other jobs: drg67, sam44, thf36, war35, smn32....

And a Red Mage can deal a little damage and has a better chance of defending themselves when MP runs low.

40. ony problem with that is...
most parties won't let a rdm be something other than a refresh-bitch and back up healer... unless there is a bard or corsair in the party...

stupid job snobs... it's players like that that really make me avoid playing those jobs. once a job is pigeonholed into a certain role it's damned hard to break out of it. for me, my biggest pet peeve in ffxi is everyone seems to think ninjas are only good for tanking... not true, ninjas make fairly competent damage dealers and good pullers. ninja/ranger may be one of the most expensive jobs in the game, but it can be an awesome puller. shame they can't use crossbows or i'd solo that like a motherfocker... two words: bloody bolts

27. I've found that I need to limit my jack-of-all-trades-ness in RPGs
both tabletop and computer. Because I end up spreading myself so thin that I can't do crap. :P

So I usually just end up picking a class that can solo pretty well. I figure they've got well-rounded-ness built in, and so I don't have to work for it and spread myself too thin.

My favorite character back when I used to play Everquest was my Froglok paladin. She was bad-ass. Had a healing spell or two to make sure her HP didn't get too low, had a couple spells that would help in combat (the most useful was a blinding spell that would make enemies run the wrong direction. Handy if I accidentally pulled more than I could handle.), did a pretty decent amount of damage, and could tank fairly well.

I also decided as a craft I'd give her something that could help her strike from a distance... so I had her working on her bow-making skills. Which also helped when I was in a group and I wanted to tank. :) I'd shoot an couple arrows from a distance, do some damage, get their attention on me. And if it accidentally pulled another enemy... *flash* blinding spell. I had a pretty good system going until my ex and I broke up and I realized I couldn't afford to keep playing. :(

28. My problem is I get bored if I'm stuck in one role
I hate constantly being the tank, the healer, etc. I like having a varied mix of skills. It's one of the reasons why Bards were just about my favorite D&D class if I was ever forced to single class. If not, I multiclass every single time.

Yes I hate pigeon holing even in games. :P

17. I hated easy games when I was 9.
Still do. Fortunately it was a lot different when I was little--games were a lot harder then because developers weren't so concerned with the "casual" market.

WoW is boring because it's too easy to advance, and what's worse the people on it are jerks. The problem with an online game that's as popular as that one is the more people you have, the higher the jerk quotient goes up. It's also an unbelievably sexist and homophobic environment, even for an online game. A while back the company actually banned a guild for catering to LGBT players. It was reversed but Blizzard really has a sorry track record with customer service issues in general.

I've only been playing FFXI for a day and I already like it ten times better. There's more of a sense of community, largely because of the way the game is structured: sure, you can solo if you want, but it's exponentially harder to do so than on WoW. Teamwork's almost built into the game. It's a slower pace, and I like it.

31. for the most part
ffxi players are fairly laid back... at least the ones i play with.

i'm in two linkshells, and we've got a sizeable glbt membership, no one cares for the most part. not to say we don't run into the immature widdle twits that want to get all huffy about "teh gay" but by and large, no one gives a shit.

i take my role playing seriously, i gender-bend. mostly cause it's a challenge (in the ffxi system female suffer no stat penalties) in terms of playing with other, yes, the stereotype of gamers that don't know what do with girls, real or otherwise, is alive and well on shiva server  when i first started on ffxi i was amazed at how much free junk i was given by guys that thought i was a real girl... well, hey, why buy the milk if ye got a cow at home  and it's always good for a laugh seeing how long it takes for someone to figure out your real gender.... see here is greenwood for all the gory details... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Here_is_greenwood

the other reason i gender-bend is it's a leftover habit from my old d and d days... plus i can never think of good named for my male characters... though i managed to snag silent bob for one of my mules

god i wish this damn update would finish... onry 500 files to go

21. no insult intended.
it's just that i found it waaaaaay too easy and the majority of players were immature twits.

in retrospect, it's a gateway game for when your kid just starting out.

i do fear for the amount of idiots he'll encounter, but he'd encounter then in any game he plays online.

i like ffxi because i play on a majority japanese player server. they don't posture, they (generally) don't act like immature little prats, and more often than not they are far more willing to randomly help players in dire situations (they are also more grateful for assistance if it's their butt in a sling too). i refer to it as drive-by healing, it's something i've gotten into doing as a white mage. most JP players i've partied with are "professionals" more or less. they are in a party for a reason and they get to work, as it were. JP xp parties are the best ones i've had since they are "all business"

not to say there aren't their share of jerks, but i've encountered far fewer of them than those that are from NA...

then again, my japanese is far from fluent so i might have encountered jerks and never really known :dunce:

if your kid is of the more... micromanagy-bent, i know games he'd like to play online... the original warcraft, starcraft, civ4....

Got totally addicted and levelled my Elvaan guy to 50 in about five different jobs. Then I transferred my obsession to World of Warcraft for another year, before moving on to LoTR Online. I finally realized I have a major addiction problem regarding MMORPGs, so I uninstalled the programs, burned the disks, and pretend not to notice the existence of such games whenever I'm at Best Buy.

If I didn't, I'd be living in a the street, holding a cardboard sign that reads "will work for bandwidth." Not a pretty sight.

But, anyways I'm a raider, and WoW raids are better than others I've experienced.

As for WoW being easy. Yes it is painfully easy, but there are so many different levels one can play the game. So if one is looking for a challenge, there's arena pvp, etc. etc.

If WoW was not a good game, it would have already peaked and fallen by now, but WoW still has a strong player base and still has like two thirds of the players base of all mmorpg's.

44. I'm not saying WoW isn't a good game
Your statement that the number of players = quality of a game, is totally false. FFXI was marketed almost exclusively to Japanese gamers, and NA players who were already fans of the final fantasy series. WoW targeted the "petulant, 12 year old boys" demographic, which is why the fan base in WoW is large, rude, and a joke to every other MMORPG gamer. "Go back to WoW" is an insult used frequently in MMORPGS, directed at obnoxious players. As a game marketed mainly to 12 year olds, it would also explain why WoW is so damned easy.

46. It's a game that was marketed to Blizzard fans
But because of the quality of the game, it erupted to 10 million accounts, with only 2.5 mil of them being American.

With WoW being used as an insult, it's common for many other mmorpg's to be used as well, especially FFXI (I've known many many FFXI players switch to WoW and never go back because FFXI just never lived up because of shitty customer service, bad customizable gameplay, etc.

The mere thought that an SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) game can have a decent mmorpg is laughable. They killed Everquest, FFXI, and Vanguard.

39. shiva.
i play on the shiva server. shiva was one of the first 6 servers launched for ffxi when it was still in japan only. shiva still has a pretty sizeable population of japanese players, which works out for me since most parties i've had with non-jp gamers have gone down in utter flames.... many reasons, mostly players not know how to play their fucking jobs properly.

and for the record, dark knights and dragoons make lousy tanks. that is what paladins and ninjas are for. last night i got an invite for a party for my drg/sam to be a backup tank. when i told the guy inviting me that there is no reason for my to back up tank with a pld and a nin in the party he got pissy with me... kids these days.

drg/sam are fairly awesome damage-machines, but tanks? ha ha, it is to laugh.

god, the last time i tanked as a drg was in the valkurum dunes and even then it sucked royally.... drg doesn't get the best armor in the world sometimes and at that time i was not the best equipped drg in the world....

i'm a fairly good drg, but a better whm... god only knows why... i used to hate the job. either drg or whm is getting to 75 first... dunno which... then it's off to level samurai

i love being able to beat the crap out of monsters
