Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is a little miracle of a movie
One of the main reasons I wanted to see it is because I love Francis McDormand. If Fargo is on, no matter what's going on, I have to stop and watch it. She's one of our great acting treasures and it saddens me that the opportunities for her to play the lead in a feature film are so few. If the reviews had sucked I would have gone if only to support a movie that would cast her as the heroine.

And what a heroine she is. Not a dark as Chocolat, but its in the same vein - a romantic, funny, charming period film that delivers on all it's emotional promises.

The last two movies I saw in the theater were There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men - so what a refreshing change of pace. And the theater was packed, so apparently I wasn't the only who was looking for some well made escapist fun.

1. glad to hear it! I haven't seen a movie in the theaters in ages, but
I'll rent this one as soon as I can. Did you see "Friends with Money"? McDormand and Joan Cusack were the best part of it - and while I like ensemble casts, you often don't see enough of each character.... so I wish there had been more of those two in the film.

4. Yup.
Friends with Money has a great cast: Catherine Keener, Jason Isaacs, Frances McDormand, Joan Cusack, Jennifer Aniston. As usual, Nicole Holofcener provides an array of good roles for actresses and also takes an unflinching look at the more uncomfortable aspects of life. Don't miss the featurette on DVD, in which Frances McDormand explains what's going on with her character.

3. Boy, you really must have needed "Miss Pettigrew."
I mean after you saw There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men. One of my friends was telling me about the latter this afternoon, and I would think theater staff would hand out prescriptions for life-affirming movies at all screenings of NCFOM.

Anyway, I just slipped out to see Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and couldn't agree with you more. I'm already putting around the word to friends that they should put it on their to-see lists.
