I got stung by a wasp this morning.
At 6:00 this morning I went over to a friend's house to climb up into her attic and kill a wasp's nest and screen off the opening they were coming in from.

I went up, found the nest, sprayed it with wasp/hornet spray and then crawled out of the attic to let the spray work and to have a cup of coffee.

10 minutes later I went up, saw that the wasps were dead, knocked down the nest and started to screen in the vents on her eaves. I got 1/2 of it down, then moved so that I could get around some support beams and screen in the rest.

I reached up and started to staple the screen into place, then pushed my hand to hold the screen and *WHAM!* I got stung by a wasp who apparently didn't die from the spray.

Here it is almost 7 hours after getting stung and my hand still hurts. Yeah, I ran it under cold and then hot water while squeezing to get any poison out. Yes, I put it on ice afterwards.

But it still hurts.

I thought wasps didn't leave their stinger in your skin but I'm not sure now.

Does anyone have a sure-fire remedy to get this to stop hurting?

Thanks

:hi:

1. I've heard a paste of Adolph's meat tenderizer and water
will draw the venom out and cut the pain but I've never tried it.
And I think you have to do it soon after.

2. I've never heard that one.
I have heard that making a paste with cornstarch and applying it would help, but I really couldn't do that and finish screening in her eaves.

At least it's not swollen.

4. This sounds like something my mom would do
or maybe it was baking soda?

At any rate, I'm sorry you got stung. Ouch!

3. Try an oral pain killer like ibuprofen. We tend to think they're only good for headaches. nt

BTW - also put some topical antibiotic on that sting. Wasps and yellow jacket stings tend to get infected. I think it's because those insects are carnivores.

5. Thanks
I took 2 Alleve this morning for a backache from overworking Saturday night, so I can't really take anything more until after 6.

And it's not like it hurts all the time now, it's just every once in awhile I get this stinging pain where I got stung.

6. Um...perhaps a little medicinal whiskey?
Purely for medicinal purposes, ya unnerstan'.
Matter of fact, I think I'll go find a wasp right now.

7. I got stung by a Yellow Jacket
...it left it's stinger in my upper arm after I knocked it off...after being stung! Ouch! I'll never forget that pain... it was worse than the bee sting in the arch of my foot I got once, while wearing sandals!

9. The worst stings I ever received
was during the summer of 1980 when I ran over a hornet's nest with a lawnmower.

I was stung 87 times. Ended up going to the hospital about 2 hours later.

I'm just very happy that I didn't go into anaphylactic shock today.

11. When I look back on it, I know why everyone was laughing.
There I was, running and flailing my arms about and screaming.

I'm sure I looked like a freak of nature at the time.

12. What a nice person you are!
Wow, taking care of that wasp problem was very good of you. You have done the right things, sorry you are still hurting. Wasps don’t leave a stinger behind, in fact some will just keep injecting you with venom if you don’t kill them after the first sting. Venom is protein based, the idea is to denature the venom with acid or alkaline solutions like vinegar or baking soda or as someone mentioned meat tenderizer, an enzymatic preparation.

14. She's a friend of mine and doesn't have the money for an exterminator.
I've taken out wasp nests before so I know that the key is to get them before it gets too warm and you shouldn't have a problem.

I was working up in her attic and didn't look to see where I was putting my hand until it was too late.

At least the little bastard only got me once.

Thanks for the reassurance that it didn't leave the stinger behind.

16. Here at the local pharmacy
a good old fashioned drugstore owned by four generations of pharmacists they make a concoction called summer gel for stings, bites, burns etc.

This stuff WORKS. I have used it on bee stings and the sting is gone immediately. I even got bitten by a scorpion in the middle of the night, the sting was gone within seconds after I applied this gel.

I have no clue why they dont market this stuff other than in their own little store. The only drawback is that it is a little expensive, 9.99 for a little bottle, but it only takes a drop or two and it seems to dry up after about a year, so you have to restock it every year.

17. Oh, that is so painful.
I got stung by a couple of wasps on my hand last summer. It hurt like hell and there wasn't much I could do except wait for it to go away. What relieved the pain the most was packing my hand in ice, but it took a few days before I felt normal again.
