I am NOT a prude but this is just ridiculous |
|
I come from a family where fart humor has been honed to an art and growing up with 7 people and 1 bathroom I know too much about other peoples' business but Salon's LEADING article today "The bowel movement. What is your poo telling you about your health? It's the burning question that has everybody's head in the toilet these days." I'd been a premium subscriber ever since they started the subscription service but I'm coming up for renewal and if this is the crap (pun intended) that they're going to have as their leading story...well I'm done. Salon.com has jumped the shark one too many times. Flush 'em, I'm done.

1. Well, I can tell you one thing. If you've got your head in the toilet, |
|
burning question or no, you're doing it wrong.

2. Agree. That wasn't a banner headline I needed to see first thing in the morning |
|
Salon pole vaulted the shark with Broadsheet IMHO; however, I do enjoy Table Talk, so hang with it awhile longer.

That's just plain gross... and silly.

7. I wouldn't have even thought twice if it was a secondary article |
|
It would have been fine in the health section or as a lifestyle article but this was the best they could come up with for their main page? It's such a bad editorial judgment and it seems like they have totally forgotten what people come to Salon for. Salon used to be my first online destination every day and now most days I only go to check out Table Talk and I'd probably forget about that if I didn't have that delivered via email. What a damned shame that they've lost their way. I really feel a sense of loss because when it was good it was so good. At least I'll always have DU (unless they relax the rule about bodily function posts and I can't believe this hasn't been locked yet)

8. A lead story along similar lines |
|
At least, I think so: A couple of months ago, our lone newspaper decided to lead--front page, above the fold, color feature photo taking up the whole center of page 1A--with an in-depth, hard-hitting expose of the (wait for it) long wait-times at local (chain) restaurants. And it wasn't even the Saturday issue--it was the middle of the week.
The establishment that got the most coverage was the new Cheesecake Factory in our richest suburb. GEE I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THEY WOULD WANT TO PRETEND THAT'S A FRONT-PAGE STORY.
Mr. MG, who had been insisting I should dump our subscription, merely crowed at the new depths of stupidity. But for some reason I haven't canceled the paper. There's something about having a newspaper in the house, reading one every day, that I just can't ditch. Plus, how would we start a fire in the woodstove?

9. that's even worse than all the Brett Favre fluff pieces that have been above the fold in Milwaukee |
|
day after day it's the feature story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Times Picayune. I was ok with it the first day or so after he retired, it IS a big story here and I can accept that. Do you suppose it's because there really isn't any investigative journalism any more? They're not going out looking for stories so much as just waiting for something to fall into their lap? I don't know and I get into arguments with OeditpusRex about this when I tell him that "journalism" is dead and newspapers are really only good for reading the comics.

11. That's absolutely true |
|
Several years ago I worked at a local TV station, just around the time the last investigative reporter left. They never replaced her. Most of the time the news producers would get stories from press releases that rolled in through the fax machine or e-mail. If anyone suggested an investigative-type story, it got squashed. I actually heard the news director (I think it was him--it was definitely somebody high up on the food chain) say "Well, we don't want to make our sponsors angry." This, from the top-rated local news team in our area. :banghead:
But poo stories and thinly veiled ads-posing-as-news-stories about restaurant chains really represent the news "media" dredging the bottom of the pond. :wtf:

It used to be limited to Junior High boys. Now grown men are guffawing over fart jokes. Give me a break.

13. Actually, this is Colorectal Cancer month |
|
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 12:56 PM by hyphenate
and making people way more aware of that form of cancer--one of the leading killing cancers--is a good idea. My sister-in-law had Stage 3 rectal cancer, underwent a major surgery to remove a gigantic tumor, had a colostomy performed, and is currently undergoing a second round of chemotherapy, just finished with a second batch of radiation therapy as well. The cancer got into the lymph node in her groin, and they removed part of the tumor there, but it's so close to the femoral artery they couldn't excise the whole thing.
People are just very sensitive about that kind of bodily function, and so it's made colorectal cancer less well known than many other forms, but it grows very, very quickly, there are few symptoms, and we need to all undergo more colonoscopies in order to nip this one in the bud.
It can be embarrassing, I know, but for those who are at high risk, it's as important as anything in your life to get tested.
