I wish the History Channel wouldn't do these shows on gangs. |
|
I think it gives them a legitimacy they should not have, and makes the gang members being featured think that their lives of crime, violence, drug use, and chaos have some kind of meaning.
What the History Channel should do is, while they're filming, have the cops come round all those fucking criminals up and haul 'em away and then burn all the film and never show it.
Gang members don't need their fifteen of minutes of fame. They need to be taken down and destroyed.

1. It's about knowing what's out there. |
|
I'm a white suburbanite. I find these shows educational. There's a whole world out there that I have no clue about.
However, I'm watching First 48 on A&E.

2. Yes, you are right on that - it is good to know what's out there. |
|
And it's damned sad that there are so many gangs, and nothing or little is being done about it.
But the gang shows seem to somehow glorify them, and that makes me ill.

6. I guess it's all about perspective. |
|
I suppose if I were living in a situation where I felt I had nothing positive going on in my life, then the gangs might appeal to me. However, as me, I'd hate living like that. In the end the over-arching story in these shows is that the paranoia eventually does in the leaders.

that this series glorifies gangs. Seeing it certainly doesn't make me want to go out and join one. Nor does it make gang life seem glamorous. But that's just me.

8. Not on the Hitory Channel, anyway. |
|
Hardly glory, and probably not on the radar of gang-bangers. worthy of serious study as a historical phenomenon, though.

Like A&E with all of their cop shows.

10. First, the History Channel is infotainment and not legitimate scholarship. |
|
I've seen good stuff there, but I have also seen outright horseshit.
Having said that, however, criminal gangs are a real part of American life and it is important that we know about them.
