How dark and quiet it is outside here at night. We don't have any visible neighbors on our side of the road. There's a couple houses across the street, but we don't see their lights from our back porch. Without him there, it's just black and silent.

I'm used to his house lights and his really loud TV. He liked NBC.

1. I bought my place because of the lack of neighbors.
I guess people get used to things, otherwise nobody could live next to the tracks. I missed the O.P., is he Okay? I hope he didn't die in the fire.

3. I'm fine with it being quiet here
It's just weird. Our border collie is a real good watchdog, so he makes us feel pretty safe. Very protective of us and the property.

He miraculously made it out. He has friends to stay with. The house was destroyed though, and it's amazing our house didn't catch on fire. Both are old wood farmhouses, 50' away from each other. We had 40mph winds that night.

5. That's a big change. I like the dark and quiet, but I remember
being at family members' houses and not being able to sleep because of the lights or it was TOO quiet. Weird how we get into those patterns, isn't it?

6. Yeah -- under different circumstances, the dark and quiet wouldn't bother me

8. I wasn't the one who used a dryer vent pipe for a wood stove
