I think I'm going to have to dumb-down my resume |
|
I've heard of people having to do that. Lately I've been considering shutting my office down and going to work for a regular employer again. There's been a few job postings that I've responded to and gave them a brief explanation of my skills over the phone that's usually replied to with a quick, "Oh wow!, Can you email me your resume right now please?". Then I never hear from these people again. When I do follow up making sure they received the email the response has been less friendly than the first time we spoke and the, "Oh yeah, we got it and we'll call you if we need you" or "we hired somebody the very minute you sent it".
Sure sounds like it won't hurt, acting less experienced and qualified.
That or the person in charge of their CAD department is somebody I fired ten years ago.

1. Your resume shows that you have the right to expect |
|
adequate compensation for your skills. They look at it and say 'no way we can afford him'.

4. I once had a company tell me that they couldn't afford me |
|
But they said they really needed the help and that they would totally understand my leaving if and when a better opportunity came along. The pay cut wasn't really that bad and the overtime was good but not too much and it evened things out to about the same as I was previously making. They were good people and were as nice as could be when I gave them a two week notice. I even got a company productivity award with a cash bonus my last week there.

A potential client told me last week what he was paying his people but might consider using me and paying my fee briefly it they got too busy in a few weeks and needed help meeting their deadlines.
What he's paying his top people now is what I made in '96 as an entry level CAD tech.

5. You need multiple versions .... tuned for different roles .... |
|
You should NEVER have only ONE resume ... create 5 or 6 ... focus on different skills and abilities ... then make minor adjustments from one of those when applying for a specific position, to help you "fit".
Think of yourself as a diamond with many facets ... and the various resumes are designed to draw out those aspects.
