Oh, hell. Oh, damnation. Oh, shit. |
|
I thought I heard a child playing outside my door, which I thought exceedingly odd because it's still raining heavily outside and it's going on midnight. So I opened the door to look, and there in the breezeway was a small, wet, crying puppy dog.
It looks like it was hit by a car at one point- both legs are badly messed up, but it's been a while as the pup doesn't seem to be in pain, and gets around well. But it's hungry, tired, scared, and sitting on my lap as I type this.
(I say "it" because I haven't attempted to sex him/her yet because I don't know how much pain the legs are really causing.)
It has a collar on, and a length of fishing line attached to it- looks like it may have been tied up but got loose.
I'll canvass the buildings as I have time tomorrow, and if I can't find the owner I'll take it to a vet to be checked out.
At least for the time being, I have another mouth to feed.

1. Oh, I"m sorry. Poor doggie. |
|
Is it a puppy, or an adult? Can you tell if there are spinal issues? But it sounds like what you are doing is best - keeping him/her warm and dry and safe until you can get to the vet.
Thank you, Prisoner_Number_Six, for caring. I've been in this position before, and it is really rough.

3. The pup doesn't seem to be in any pain |
|
But with both rear legs so badly messed up (no external wounds I can see) there may be a bit of nerve damage (and this may not be a bad thing). It's a young thing, but I'm not really any judge of age in puppy dogs. I'll say two to three months old, perhaps a bit more.

4. Poor baby. He or she might need to |
|
be euthanized if the damage is severe enough. And I agree with the other poster, that the poor dog probably has a negligent owner. Will you keep us posted as to what happens?
Again, thanks. With that kind of damage, you probably want to get to the vet asap in the morning....

15. It could be in pain. The vet can give you pain medicines for her/him |
|
I give my old guy pain medication every day and a muscle relaxant on and off. It really helps him.
Actually you can check the web. I had these samples of dog asprin......which no one liked. I don't know if it was real aspirin though and what the dose was. You can give him a baby size dose of benedryl to calm him down or 1/4 of a mg of valium if you have any. (unless he is really small. I was giving my 12 pound guy 1 mg. 2X's/day for a while.

2. Helping a wet, scared puppy. |
|
You softie, you. ;)
The puppy's owner sounds kind of negligent, though. Fishing line probably isn't the best material to tie it up with, and if it's injured it doesn't seem like it's been taken to the vet. :(

6. With all due respect, I'd think twice before taking it back to the owner. |
|
Sounds like a good dog who is not being well taken care of.
But yeah, you are sweet for taking him/her in.

7. I seriously doubt I'll find the owner. |
|
I have some client/friends who do a bit of doggie rescue- at the moment they have four dogs- I may see if they'd be interested. They've dealt with badly injured animals before, and they've all pulled through remarkably.

9. I know exactly what you mean when you say "Oh hell, Oh damnation. Oh shit." |
|
I feel for you. I really do.
I'm a sucker too, and I think I know what you're going through.
I hope you wind up keeping him if you can manage that. I bet the happiest he's ever been is right now with you. Best of luck to you both.

11. well the best dog I ever had was just this type of foundlig. He turned out to be smart |
|
loyal, funny and sweet.
Started out with my (then) boyfriend's father ..the other son had found him in the rain, weka and sick. Lots of care and good vet treatment and lo! a really neat doggie appeared. Then years later, after I was married to said BF, his father died suddenly and we ended up with the dog. He was a great companion for many years to come.
If dog pulls through and can be saved, somebody will mostly likely have a gratefuly loyal friend for life.
***apology for any typos, as my cat is standing in front of my screen and I can't see what I am dooing***

My sister says it's a female pit bull, about 2 months old.
Puppy had a peaceful night sleeping in the crook of my arm, and was playful this morning, nipping my fingers. She doesn't want solid food but chewed on a puppy milk bone, and she really loves heavy cream. She also drinks water without problems. Her legs bother her- probably some spinal injuries, and it feels like a couple ribs may have been broken, I'll get her to the vet before the day's out.
More as it happens.

19. thank you for the update! |

sounds like a sweet girl doggie ... probably with an asshole owner. Poor damn dogs - I feel so sorry for the whole breed; jerks who want to feel tough buy pit bulls (a poor man's Hummer) and then ignore them or abuse them to feel dominant. People are so f*cked up. Of course, not *all* who have pit bulls are that way, it just seems the breed has more than its fair share of insecure, asshole owners.
Thank you for your kindness, Prisoner_Number_Six

I already know what they're going to say, and I am forced to agree. I'm already steeling myself for it, but deep down I know this puppy will never have anything but pain.
Who would have thought a one night stand could lead to such deep love? I do NOT want to do what I know must be done.

May not be so bad. If pup isn't painful, then that's a good thing.
Thanks for taking care of her, whatever the outcome.

You are a real sweetie. Please don't look too hard for owners. If you must find a home for her, consider checking out the Pit rescue folks. They will help. Poor baby sounds like she's been abused/neglected, etc. z
