one, at that (the giant eyes seem to suggest so).. the tiny ears suggest a semi-acquatic lifestyle, or maybe a thick brush dweller (?). Just a guess.

23. It looks a little like a The Tasmania Tiger without hair
Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 12:03 PM by Maraya1969

INTRODUCTION

The Tasmanian Tiger, also called the Tasmanian Wolf or Thylacine, is a large marsupial native to Tasmania. Most scientists believe it to be extincted since 1930 however each year there are about a dozen unconfirmed sightings in remote areas of Tasmania.

1. DESCRIPTION

The thylacine looked like a large, long dog, with stripes, a heavy stiff tail and big head. Fully grown it measured about 180cm from nose to tail tip, stood about 58cm high at the shoulder and weighted up to 30kg. The short soft fur was brown except for 13-20 dark-brown stripes that extended from the base of the tail to almost the shoulders. The stiff tail became thicker toward the base and appeared to merge with the body.
It had an enormous gape, the largest of any mammal. They were unique amongst marsupials in that the male had a rudimentary pouch.
The thylacine was rarely seen to move fast, but when it did it appeared awkward. It trotted stiffly and when pursued broke into a shambling canter.
Thylacine was usually mute, but when anxious or excited made a series of husky, coughing barks.
Thylacine lived in zoos up to 9 years, but never bred in captivity. Their life expectancy in the wild was probably 5-7 years.

2. DISTRIBUTION AND ENVIRONMENT

We know that it used to be widespread in Australia about 7000years ago and has probably been extinct there for 2000 years. This has been attributed to the competition of dingoes, which were introduced at lest 8000 years ago.
Bass Strait protected a relict population of thylacines in Tasmania. Their preferred habitat was a mosaic of dry eucalyptus forest, wetlands and grasslands. They emerged to hunt on grassy plains and open woodlands during the evening, night or early morning.
Unfortunately the thylacines habitat coincided with the best farming areas. They were seen as a direct threat to sheep and poultry and they were shot. That led to the thylacine's extinction.

3. DIET

The thylacine was a meat-eater, in fact the world's largest marsupial carnivore since the extinction of Thylacoleo, the marsupial "lion". Its diet is believed to have consisted largely of wallabies, but included various small animals and birds. Since European settlement, the thylacine also preyed upon sheep and poultry. Occasionally the thylacine scavenged.
In captivity, thylacines were fed on dead rabbits and wallabies, which they devoured entirely, as well as beef and mutton.
They had very large jaws opening larger than that of any other mammals.

4. BEHAVIOUR

Thylacine was shy and secretive and always avoided contact with human. Despite its common name "tiger", it had a quiet, nervous temperament compared to its little cousin, the Tasmanian devil.
Captured animals generally gave up without a struggle, and many died suddenly, apparently from shock. When hunting, the thylacine relied a good sense of smell, and stamina. It was said to pursue its prey relentlessly until the prey was exhausted.
When hunting, it had a terrier-like double yap, repeated every few seconds.
It hunted wallabies and small animals. It was the first step of a food chain and its main predator was the dingo in Australia and the European settler in Tasmania.
Thylacines lived in small groups.

5. BREEDING

Breeding is believed to occur during winter and spring. A thylacine, like all marsupials, was tiny and hairless when born.
It crawled into the mother's rear opening pouch, and attached itself to one of four teats. Four young could be carried at a time, but the usual litter size was probably three. As the pouch young grew, the pouch expanded, and became so big that it reached almost to the ground. Large pouch young was fur with stripes. When old enough it live the pouch, the young stayed in a lair such as a deep rocky cave, well-hidden nest or hollow log, whilst the mother hunted.

6. STATUS

The arrival of European settlers marked the start of a tragic period of conflict that led to the thylacine's extinction. The introduction of sheep in 1824, a new and easy prey for the thylacine, led to that conflict. Bounty was placed on them in 1830 and 2184 claims for bounties were made until 1910, and a sudden decline of thylacine numbers occurred early in the 20th century. Hunting, habitat destruction and later a disease on a weakened remnant population were the main causes of extinction.
Thylacines were trapped for zoos and the last known thylacine died in Hobart Zoo in 1936.
In 1936, Tasmanian Tiger was added to the list of protected wildlife and in 1986 it was declared extinct. Since 1936, there have been hundred of sightings of thylacines but there are no evidence of their authenticity and of the thylacine's survive.
Island's vast tracts of rugged mountains, temperate rain forests and inhospitable terrains may be the last sanctuaries for the Tasmanian Tiger.
