It's official: I can NOT choose decent paint colors. |
|
Having nearly completed the wallpaper removal and painting of my den, I stood back to take in the full effect of the new wall color.
It looks like Eddie Bauer crapped on my den. It was supposed to be a spicy cinnamon-brick color. It looks like mud. It looks like I should throw down some astroturf, pitch a tent, a fire up a camp stove in here. I don't even like camping. Ugh.

1. Did you prime it first? |
|
Apparently with some of the premium paints you're supposed to use the correct grey-tone primer.

2. Yes. I just suck at picking paint colors. |
|
This comes on the heels of my "raspberry" mud room debacle. That color was likened to "an old lady's bathroom," and "the Barbie Fun House." I had to repaint it beige.

|

I was looking at the left side of the screen, and I knew this was your thread by seeing just the title.

7. I wish I had mud on my kitchen walls. |
|
Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 03:33 PM by GoddessOfGuinness
It would be infinitely preferable to the 1970s neo-colonial style wallpaper that adorns them now. The predominant colors are maize, olive, off-white, and brown; and the print includes a George Washington-like portrait captioned with the words "Patria Pater"...only the last "r" is blocked by an equally vomit-invoking picture of a "colonial" business sign. So George Washington appears to have the caption "Patria Pate"... ("founding liver?")
Give me mud any day.

8. I really wish I lived near you so I could help. |

I've done a lot of painting for myself and others. I have an eye for color. If you are thinking of repainting the wall get lots of color sample cards from Ace or Home Depot and look at them during different times of day in the room you are painting. The colors will look different depending on the time of day. Also compare the sample cards to your carpet or rugs and furniture. That will also change the way the color looks. And don't be afraid to get lots of opinions from family and friends. And if all else fails, white always looks good on walls. You can add color with throw pillows and pictures on the walls. Good luck! :hi:

10. did you do two coats? |
|
often the color won't look right with just one.
Also, lighting can play a HUGE part in it, as can wall size for changing how a color looks.

Put white molding around the bottom, and white crown molding on the top. This should soften and define your space.

I'm terrified to pick out colors.
I was aiming for a pale-ish rose color for my bedroom, and came out with something perilously close to Pepto-Bismol.
Those paint chip colors are never accurate.

But I've found that as someone recommended upthread, it does help to tape several paint chips to the wall and see how the color looks at different times of the day as the light differs.
Also, even when you don't want to, the best thing to do is pick the next lighter color on that paint chip than the one you really like.

16. get some glaze and tint it (just barely) with red |
|
got over it once more after mixing the tinted glaze 50/50 with water
it will brighten it up and give it a bit of shine
it's cheap and if it still sucks you can paint again
