19. I can do forward slaloms and swizzles just fine.

But it seems that no matter what I do, when I try to twist and turn in whatever direction to start moving... I go forward. No matter how I move my weight or do anything. :\ 'tis rather annoying. I'm very graceful for someone who's skated for as short a period of time as I have. But that just eludes me.

I hadn't skated since I was in elementary school (when I used to skatedance with friends) until I went to skate night for my kids' school. I was amazed I could still skate backwards.

I'm from the south so I've been ice skating about twice. but I could skate backwards with them, too. sooo

have you ever done that in and out weave - it's easier to do backward than forward. it's the thing where you go

etc. go to a wall and do that weave backward. that move is the most stable way to go backward. when you feel comfortable with that, you can give yourself a push backward off your toe and you can try skating that way. then practice backwards with your feet going in the same direction at the same time.

to turn a corner, it's just like a forward move when you put one foot over the other (depending on the direction you're skating.)

The first one is called a 'swizzle' and the second one is a 'slalom'. I can do the slolom and swizzle forward just fine. I just can't get started going.

I'll just keep trying until I figure out what I'm doing wrong, I s'pose.

And I'm using hockey skates (damn near impossible to find figure skates within my budget, in my size AND sturdy enough to support my weight) so I don't have a toepick to push off of. Otherwise I woulda done that already. :P

until I started working at a pizza place.

You'd think I wouldn't have developed 'em until I worked my warehouse/manual labor job... but nope. 'Twas the pizza place before that. Kneading and pulling dough for at least an hour every day'll work those forearm muscles even more than having a long-distance relationship will.

That was also around the time I took up sword sparring too, so that certainly didn't hurt.
