Geico insurance
Opinions? Are they an ok company? Unbeknownst to me when my house was foreclosed my insurance company canceled my home owners AND auto policy. I now find out that I've been driving w/o insurance since fall (scary in retrospect when I think of how bad the roads were over the winter). So my insurance agent can only find 1 company who will cover me, both because of the gap in insurance as well as my credit rating being in the toilet. They want 1200 bucks a year to insure my car. I was paying 400 a year before :( I checked out Geico and they'll give me insurance for 600 a year. The deductables are the same but the total liability is 200,000 per accident versus 500,000 with the more expensive policy. I've got no assets to lose so do I really need the higher coverage? Is Geico an okay company?

I'm trying really hard to not be angry about how many obstacles get thrown into your path when you're trying to recover from a crisis. I really don't see why a poor credit rating should make your auto insurance go up x3. Especially since it's been 20 years since I've had so much as a speeding ticket. I wonder if I'll have to continue paying for this for the rest of my life :(

WE haven't had to use them, thank God, but so far it hasn't been terrible.

2. I used to have GEICO and they were fine.
Granted, I had no claims, but I never had an issue with them. They were pleasant to deal with and their phone staff was always helpful to me. I would still be a customer of theirs had I not gone to work for another major insurance company.

3. a family member just went through
a similar situation. Progressive wanted to gouge her for the same reasons as yours. we ended up getting her insured through Geico at a much more reasonable rate.

the people we dealt with on the phone from Geico were pleasant. we'll see now it goes when and if we have to process a claim. but it's better than NO insurance, or getting screwed out the wazoo by predatory insurance companies.

4. I was hit by a driver with Geico
And I must say that though the experience wasn't pleasant, Geico made it as easy as possible. There were no injuries, thank the gods, and Geico gave me a loaner and had my car fixed in record time. Maybe I should do a commercial "For my next accident, I'll go with Geico".

6. I had GEICO for years
but my only experience with them was getting my policy and sending them my money. I never had a claim.

I never had any trouble with them, but when a claim is involved is the true test. And my premiums were cheaper with them than with Progressive.

They did drop me, though, when I got my first ticket in my life, but it was a BIG one.

7. I've used them for years,
have had a couple of accidents which were easily resolved. I've no complaints to make or warning flags to make. It's really convenient to deal with their internet system at all hours of the day and their rates have always been fairly reasonable.

8. I used to have Geico.
I was in an accident where the other driver was ticketed and clearly at fault. His insurance company dragged its feet about doing anything. Everyone told me to talk to my company (Geico) about paying and then going after his company--what's called "abrogation". Geico told me they don't do abrogation, that I needed to deal with the other guy's company. That's an unusual situation, so take it for what it's worth. Others here have had good experiences, so I'd say you should go with it.

There's a company that advertises here all the time that seems to be trying to attract business from people who have trouble getting insurance. Called "Safe Auto". Don't know anything else about 'em, but they might be another option.

Good luck, and sorry this has happened to you!

9. They should be fine...I hope they don't come back and re-adjust the figures
Some companies "might" do this, just to get you in the "door".

If so, keep looking. There are companies out there who do not look at credit for auto.
The agent might have to speak with the underwriter about the lapse in coverage on your behalf, but hang in there.

Also, make sure GEICO is quoting a year and not a six month policy. My current company is by the year and GEICO kept quoting a six month policy for comparison. After about the third time asking them if it was truly for a year, the lady said it was for six months. No WONDER it sounded too good to be true.

11. They already did, LOL
I signed up online after I got a couple positive posts here and gave them my drivers license number and so on and within a couple hours they had upped the rate for the 6-month plan by $30 because in 2003 I gouged my car on a dumpster. Still and all, it's about 1/2 of what Progressive wanted to charge so not that big a deal.

14. My mom has had Geico for decades
and my son was insured with them since the couldn't be beat for a 16 year old driver. I would use them but they can't touch my rates now. Mom has had her car hit a few times-best one was the horse and buggy hit and run while her car was parked in front of her house. Kid knocked on her door right after to tell her, cops there in less than a minute and they couldn't find the horse and buggy. After the Geico rep laughed and apologized for laughing they fixed her car no problem.
Unfortunately had to use them to help when my son was hit by a drunk driver. They were great and paid the difference between his maximum liability and the drunk drivers very low liability. They also went after the drunk driver for restitution for their expenses and it is because of them that we got our restitution caught up. I had a hard time getting his parole officer to take it seriously and enforce the conditions of the guys release. Geico called us and ask us if it were ok with us for them to go after him before they did it. They didn't have to ask us for permission but I feel it was very decent of them to do it instead of bringing up a lot of pain with out any warning.

10. Geico is fine,
go with them. I just did.

Don't know all about it, but one reason for lower rates may be high numbers of govt employees, with whom they began, I think. They're saving me A LOT!

13. We have Geico and have no complaints whatsoever
Been with them for 7+ years; our car slid into a tree on an icy road and they were great about getting it fixed.

I'd love to go with a well-known liberal company like Progressive, but I checked out their rates and was shocked. So I'm going to stick with the company that has treated our family well. Don't worry about them at all, Connonym.

was the #10 reason to watch the new season of Battlestar Galactica according to tonight's David Letterman's top 10
