76. St Pattys was weird because they moved it up a from Monday to Friday the 14th |
|
this was because of 'holy week'. There were more than a few tourists who showed up on Monday expecting a parade.
We tradionally have the 2nd largest parade in the nation.

I meant Haruka through DU, and we were married in September. I moved here, because the laws here are better than in VA! We have the same marital rights here as straight married couples. Haruka was already living here.

You don't see many people moving into NJ, usually out. Although I personally think NJ, is a nice place to live. Although I doubt it's as scenic as VA.

The area we're in is very nice, but the traffic during my commute sucks, and property taxes are so high, it's making it very difficult for us.
Having said that: I DO like NONJ alot, and I like having the City so close.

75. Traffic and property taxes the State's 2 biggest problems |
|
I often thought that a smart Governor would put a 5 or 10 cent tax on gas that would go to a fund dedicated to improving the traffic problem. The way I figure, that would pay for itself, by saving time and gas.
As for property tax, I am not sure there is an easy solution. There needs to be a consolidation of services at the local levels and the educational costs need to be looked at. Not sure how any town can stay in business, when it's costing 12-20K for every child sent to school.

78. I agree about consolidation |
|
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 08:53 AM by LostinVA
The "township/boro/etc." system here in NJ cripples the State monetarily (imo). I've lived in both NC and VA for24 years between my two NJ living experiences, and both areas (especially NC) is great at the consolidation of services. I think doing this, like how Morris County has a library consortium, would help ALOT.
I lived in a VERY expensive part of VA, where housing prices were similar to here, but the tax base was much less. I mean, even if you can handle a mortgage for a $300,000 home, how the hell can most working families then afford $6-7k for taxes on a 1,500 sft home? Crazy. We don't live close enough to NYC to warrant that.

65. There are at least 7 or 8 of us here in Durham, one of them less than a mile from me. |
|
Some may be closer- hard to tell, since I've never met them IRL.

I know there is at least one DUer in the next town, Brewer, and one other somewhere here in Bangor, though she's not a prolific poster. If there are others I'm not aware of them. Kinda sad, really. :P

On edit: GoG had a meetup in Columbia last year, which we crossed paths but didn't know who we were looking for (D'oh).
I'm not sure if she actually lives in Columbia, but she is in the Columbia Orch.

I thought he meant at the exact moment. I work down here.
But actually, over the past few years, there are apartment buildings going up all over the place. Wall Street,Maiden Lane, John Street. There's an NYU dorm across the street from me. And now that the fish market is gone, the area will probably see a lot more gentrification over the next few years.

103. The Iwilei section of Honolulu, once a notorious red-light district |
|
these days the epicenter of the city's surprisingly harge homeless population.
Distance from Honolulu to Newark airports is 4,969 nautical miles; tack on another 10 or so for the West Village.
Next nearest DUer to here is probably ellisonz, on the UH-Manoa campus about four miles across town.
