1. That is the most beautiful music on earth.
I cry whenever I hear it. And I can listen to it always. Thanks for the reminder.

16. It was used prominently in Platoon
and in a couple of others, although I can't remember which.

It's Adagio for Strings, by Samuel Barber, and it was originally a movement of a string quartet that Barber wrote in the 1930s.

It first became well known when it was played at FDR's funeral.

2. The Adagio for Strings moves me to tears in whatever setting I hear it.
I just can't help it. This makes it that much stronger.

10. Same here
I *love* piece. And it gives me chills.

My ex arranged it for a marimba ensemble. I was not pleased at first (why mess with perfection), but it's actually very good if he has good players.

The 9/11 images make it so compelling.

17. I can't decide if "Elephant Man" or "Platoon" was my favorite use of it in film.
They used it in "Amelie" as well, but Amelie was mostly a lighthearted film.

Adagio for stings has to be the most tragic instrumental piece ever.

18. Listen to the vocal version of the Adageo, Agnus Dei - ravishing
Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi,
miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis
peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God that takest away the sins
of the world, have mercy upon us.
Lamb of God that takest away the sins
of the world, grant us peace.

20. If you love this music, recommend a couple of CDs
Peace Handel and Haydn Society Chorus, director Grant Llewellyn. It's a collection of hymns -- Agnus Dei, John Tavener's Song for Athene, Edward Elgar's Lux Aeterna and several more.

Allegri Miserere, The Tallis Scholars, director Peter Phillips

Neither are easy listening because of the emotions they evoke; however, when I despair of humanity, these help me remember we can create perfect beauty.

22. We have another choral fan in da haus?
A couple weeks ago at ACDA in Louisville, I heard the Taylor Festival Singers do Agnus Dei set to Barber's 'Adagio' - it was fantastic...

24. I love Barber's music...
Especially the Adagio. It lends depth to any image it accompanies. But my favorite way to enjoy the piece is to close my eyes and allow the music to illuminate within.

26. I love slow chill music like this
I ain't watching the video 'cause I'm needing to sleep. Adiagos and larghettos are my best dream musics. I don't want to couple the thinking with grief since it is so perdy I'm near in tears listening as I type. They are happy joy kinds though.

Happy Easter lost!
