What is your favorite part of the day?
Just simple, everyday pleasures you look forward to: the first cup of coffee, or a nice hot shower, or lunch with friends... What do you do every day (or most days) that you really like?

I love the first sip of good coffee, and at night I really look forward to crawling into bed with a good book and my kittehs all around and my husband by my side. I cannot tell you how much I love this part of the day; if I don't get to read before I go to sleep I really feel out-of-sorts.

So. How about you guys?

1. I don't have one but if there were a part of the day where I became numb and developed temporary
amnesia for a few hours or so then that would be it.

13. I didn't mean it that way!
My job is stressful and an hour or two of complete disconnect a day sounds appealing. That's all I meant. :)

5. you like the quiet and dark?
I can see that - I'm a night owl, bedtime for me is usually between 2-3 a.m. and late night is nice.

16. that's why I do my show in the middle of the night
That's where my passion for radio started; listening (and twirling the dials) to an old AM radio in the middle of the night when I was a kid, listening to far-off stations...

18. I agree
I started staying up all night a couple of months ago. I really prefer it. Things are a lot calmer at night.

4. Yes, snuggling up in bed every night with a good book (a must!)
that first sip of good strong coffee in the morning, and after 5pm when the phone (usually) stops ringing at work. I like to watch Letterman's monologue every night and look forward to that (even when it's not too good).

7. it is ridiculous how much I look forward to reading every night...

sort of helps impose some sense of normalcy on what might otherwise have been a hectic day, or a bad day, or whatever.

12. I agree.
Just 20 minutes or a few chapters of an interesting book centers me and calms me and settles me in for the night. I typically keep the book on the light side if it's my "before bed book." Interesting, but not scary or too serious-upsetting, ya know?

20. yup; I read mysteries at night --
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 11:33 PM by Flaxbee
not dark, tense ones, but stuff like Rumpole of the Bailey, Donna Leon's Venice, Italy mysteries, and I've lately gotten into Anne Perry's Victorian-era London mysteries. I don't want to think too much, or get depressed at the state of the world; I just want to be entertained and informed in an easy way, do a little bed-time (as opposed to arm-chair) traveling, etc.

What do you read?

(edited for clarity)

24. I like reading
mysteries too. Here's some of my favorite authors:

Nevada Barr, Margaret Maron, Jonathan Kellerman, Steven Saylor, Barbara Kingsolver, Laura Lippman.

BTW, the author Anne Perry has an interesting background--have you ever read about her personal life in her early years:

27. wow - I had NO IDEA that is who Anne Perry is!!
I've seen Heavenly Creatures, and know about the case, but never knew that was Anne Perry's history. I am floored. How very interesting, thank you for telling me.

I also really enjoy Margaret Maron - need to get the one after "Winter's Child", and I *love* Barbara Kingsolver. Have you read her latest nonfiction, "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle"? Very good, interesting discussion of food.

I have, in the past, loved Dorothy Sayers and P.D. James, Minette Walters until she became rather gruesome (not good for bedtime reading, some of her later works are very disturbing, though "The Sculptress" and "The Ice House" are fantastic), Ruth Rendell, Deborah Crombie, and Colin Dexter (his entire Inspector Morse series). Also, Alexander McCall Smith, both his Mma Ramotswe and Isabel Dalhousie series.... and if you want some very funny, entertaining mysteries, I highly recommend the Southern Sisters series by Anne George.

I'll check out Nevada Barr and the others you've mentioned. I'm always on the lookout for new authors.

14. I didn't think of that
I got "cool of the evening" from Johnny Sain, when he was Detroit's pitching coach. That's what he called the part of the day when a guy could look back on a good day's work and be content.

There's this, too:

Day is done
Cousin Jack
In his yard, cookin' steaks on a grill
that I'll never get back
The kids in front of the teevee
Harry with his family
Sis on her date, Mom at the door
Smiles as she surveys the sight:
For the first time today, the kingdom is quiet

9. Hard to say...
Morning coffee on the patio is a great way to start the day, but a nice glass of wine after dinner at dusk is great, too. I always have to read a few chapters in my favorite book, with kittehs, and SO in bed before sleep. Can't pick a favorite.

17. Any part that the goddamn sun doesn't shine through my windows.
God fuck it all, I hate that.

If it's an overcast day, then the entire day is my favorite.

If it's a godforsaken sunny day, then I only like the afternoon, because then the sun doesn't shine in; but on the other hand, in my office, the afternoon is the time that the sun comes right direct fucking in through my office window, forcing me to go home or somewhere else to work.

21. I like cloudy mornings, too --
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 11:37 PM by Flaxbee
I stay up late, so a 'regular' night's sleep for me is 2-3am to 10-11am; if the sun is all perky and happy at 6am it is hard to sleep. Gimme an overcast morning breaking into nice sunshine about 10am and it's perfect. Though I do *hate* to have the blinding setting western sun in my eyes. Makes me irritable.

You should live in Helsinki, Finland. Really cool city, long dark days. But then again, summertime would kill you.

23. My ideal living situation would be winter in Alaska (or Helsinki, or Scotland)
and Summer in Antarctica (during its winter).

Minimize the sun as much as possible.

I don't mind sunlight per se - it does a lot of good for the world. But I absolutely fucking hate it shining directly into my living space. And I like to keep my blinds and curtains open - I want to see the world! I don't want to feel closed in.

But if the sun is shining, I can't open the curtains. And that pisses me off.

Whenever I'm in a position that I can build a house, the south side will have no windows (or, I might put a greenhouse on the south side), and the deck area will be on the north and east side so that it's actually usable in the evening without the fucking sun shining in people's eyes and shit.

26. I couldn't help thinking of this song when I saw this post
(and no, it's not a RickRoll):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqWP7uDsjPo

The Who, "Blue Red and Grey"
Some people seem so obsessed with the mornings
Get up early just to watch the sun rise
Some people like it more when there's fire in the sky
They worship the sun when it's high
Some people go for those sultry evenings
Sipping cocktails in the blue, red, and grey
But I like every minute of the day

I like every second
So long as you are on my mind
Every moment has its special charm
It's all right when you're around, rain or shine

I know a crowd who only live after midnight
Their faces always seem so pale
And then there's friends of mine who must have sunlight
They say a suntan never fails
I know a man who works the night shift
He's lucky to get a job and some pay
But I like every minute of the day

I dig every second
I can laugh in the snow and rain
I get a buzz from being cold and wet
The pleasure seems to balance out the pain

And so you see that I'm completely crazy
I even shun the south of France
The people on the hill, they say I'm lazy
But when they sleep, I sing and dance
Some people have to have those sultry evenings
Sipping cocktails in the blue, red and grey
But I like every minute of the day
I like every minute of the day.

- Now, in answer to your question, I'm more of an evening person...there's something about the sun going down that brings a sense of calm to me, I think (well, usually that's the case anyway). :hi:

30. Depends on the time of year. Winter: when I'm home in my
grub wear (sweats or flannels) and am curled up in the corner of the loveseat with a pillow and a blanket and am ready to be a couch potato for the remainder of the day.

Nice weather: when I'm home in my grub wear (jeans or work pants/shorts) and heading out to the garden(s), or the woods, or the campsite(s), or the firepit(s), or off to the garden center :-)
