A Jehovah's Witness just came to my door
— a woman I used to work with and hadn't seen in about 5 1/2 years.

I knew she was JW, but it never came up at work. I always liked her, and I still do.

TOTally bizarre, though.

1. Did you take her pamphlet/tract?
Neat you got to see your old workmate. Did you all talk?

I used to give'em a dime to go away. Now, I just have this posted at my door, and still they feel obliged to offer paper leavings.

I must be the devil to to have such a sign...

6. Yeah, we did the standard 'How've you been?' bit
I liked Sandra because she had a great capacity to be goofy. Once — I forget what led to this, but — someone and I were talking about a scene from "I Love Lucy," the one where she dressed up like a Wicked City Woman to scare off Cousin Ernie. Sandra obviously overheard this, because she came slinking out of her office and walked across the newsroom with her right arm extended in front of her. Broke me the fuck up. :D

I think maybe she felt as awkward as I did, though.

20. If it weren't for my wife, a conservative Republican, I post a sign like this:
NO SALESMEN
NO MISSIONARIES
NO DOGS
NO REPUBLICANS

B-)

2. "I appreciate you stopping by..
..I respect your beliefs, but I don't share your beliefs, and I'm going to ask you to leave now."

This is my stock JW speech. My wife says I'm too nice. I have a friend who eggs them on with talk of Satan worship.

Now you should take a different approach with LDS (aka Mormon) missionaries. If you can time it right, be doing some chore, like cleaning the gutters, when they show up (generally in pairs, on bikes). If you'll talk religon with them for an hour, those young men have been known to pitch in and help out.

3. I always ask them...
"Is it true that only 144,000 get into heaven?" When they reply in the affirmative, I always say, "sorry, I can't handle that level of competition."

They usually leave after that.

Must be a coordinated outreach effort.

8. Apparently so
They're having some World-Wide Thing tomorrow to mark "the anniversary of Jesus' death."

We know it's the anniversary because the Gregorian calendar has been in use since the Earth was created 7,000 years ago.

:)

7. also just had a knock at my door
and it was a college sorority girl canvassing for Obama. There may be some way for me to find agreement with greekgeek after all. :) She was with a guy who was working farther down the road. She had nothing bad to say about Clinton, other than it's time for some new names and faces in the White House. Could not agree more.

She gave me an Obama bumper sticker and pin. Made me so happy I changed my sig line.

This day is looking better all the time!

9. I always ask them for their organization's official position on the Oxford comma.

I just can't focus on anything else they say until I KNOW.

11. I don't think that would've fazed her
since I was an editor when we worked together.

She'd GET it. :)

13. Yes, but if you vehemently *disagreed* with the church's position on Oxford commas...

...they would probably deem you an unsalvageable heretic, and cross you off their list.

14. I think that probably happened
when I answered the door wearing a cloth diaper(,) and a ball gag.

17. I think the term "ball gag" is misleading.

Because it doesn't actually gag your balls.

Anyway, what? Why would a cloth diaper be offensive? I mean, it's both economically and ecologically more responsible than a disposable.

21. Well, yeah, that is a significant breach of any civilized diaper door greeting protocol.

Everybody knows that diaper head adornment begins after the tea ceremony.

Oedi, Oedi. No wonder she seemed uncomfortable.

=sigh=

19. Ever since I scattered pamphlets around a chalk outline of a person in the driveway, they don't
bother coming to the door.
