I thought regressives were tolerant, but I haven't seen much of that
I thought regressives were tolerant, but I haven't seen much of that around here.

I suppose it's because the regressives I'm thinking of existed roughly fifty thousand or so years ago.
It is neo-regressives, the dominant force for the last few thousand years of which I speak, it is they who
have relentlessly sought to degrade the quality of my life these last sixty five plus years.

Initially I planned to quote Weber's expose of the Christianity/Protestant Work Ethic responsibility for
Capitalism as it exists today. Then I considered something of Emma Goldman's, essay on Woman Suffrage, perhaps something from the last paragraph---
"Her development, her freedom, her independence, must come from and through herself. First, by asserting herself as a personality, and not as a sex commodity. Second, by refusing to bear children, unless she wants them; by refusing to be a servant to God, the State, society, the husband, the family, etc., by making her life simpler, but deeper and richer. That is, by trying to learn the meaning and substance of life in all its complexities, by freeing herself from the fear of public opinion and public condemnation. Only that, and not the ballot, will set woman free, will make her a force hitherto unknown in the world, a force for real love, for peace, for harmony; a force of divine fire, of life-giving; a creator of free men and women."

Then I thought something from my Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets might say it better so I found this paragraph in the section on Religion--
"Some scholars find it baffling that man seems unable to found an ethic or a philosophy on perceptions of reality, but instead must cling to crude myths--even to the point of filling his own life and the lives of others with unnecessary horrors. Among the worst of these is the real violence with which man attacks the questioners or doubters of his myths; as if to kill his own reasonable doubts before they rise up to the surface of his mind and become fully conscious."

But, tormented with indecision, I decided against including both of those and returned to Emma Goldman to unearth this gem--

"Religion, especially the Christian religion, has condemned woman to the life of an inferior, a slave. it has thwarted her nature and fettered her soul, yet the Christian religion has no greater supporter. none more devout, than woman. Indeed, it is safe to say that religion would have long ceased to be a factor in the lives of the people, if it were not for the support it receives from women. The most ardent churchworkers, the most tireless missionaries the world over, are women, always sacrificing on the altar of the gods that have chained her spirit and enslaved her body."

Though it is religion writ large I speak of, I find it appalling that those who can't keep their religion to themselves feel they are somehow deserving of respect.
