If someone knows you, then they should know when you're being sarcastic, but when typing to people you don't know, they wouldn't necessarily know when you are being serious or not.

I do think its necessary. Usually I can pick up sarcasm but sometimes not. And then I feel like this:

4. I admit that I use it sparingly

I prefer to frame my dazzling wit in such a way that the sarcasm reveals itself, but sometimes even this is impossible.

Yesterday in LBN I employed what I afterwards described as "shovel-to-the-head" sarcasm, and a few people still managed not to pick up on it.

To identify someone's sarcasm,
and avoid a debilitating spasm,
a smilie was used.
Although some refused,
giving Orrex an intense feeling of happiness.

On January 24th, 2009, in the oval office of the new Democratic president:

The Secretary of Defense is giving the President the daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, three Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

The President's staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and says, "One Brazilian is too many! I am glad that we are beginning to draw down our presence in Iraq and put an end to this long national nightmare."
