How does one go about running a credit check on someone else?

How does one go about running a credit check on someone else?
And will it show the exact amount of their debt? If it won't, is there a service that will provide that?

I'd prefer you not ask why. It's pretty personal.

1. I believe fed law dictates that you have their permission to do so.
IIRC, even Accurint doesn't give up credit info so easily.

I may well be wrong, though.

you can do background checks of people online for a nominal fee which often shows some credit data

3. nope, you cannot get personal, private financial/credit info from background checks

4. but you do get any criminal or civil charges filed correct?
like if someone kited bad checks or filed for bankruptcy or was taken to court for unpaid bills right?

5. yes on the court records, those are public and anyone can look them up

6. You'd also get Lis Pendens, judgments, liens and mortgages
These are the only real "debts" and defaults you'd find. All public record.
