1. Evidently you haven't read much supposedly funny spoof science fiction.
:scared:

2. If you read it carefully, you'll find most science fiction
is based on the bible. Talking animals? Bats are birds and rabbits chew a cud? People disappearing into the clouds? Burning bushes that talk? Wheels of fire in the sky? Raising people from the dead?

Add a good dash of fantasy to the sf.

11. Actually, I read a great deal of comparative spirituality
and know that the powers displayed by Jesus are considered common in India, and that there are shaman and mystics in nearly every country (some positive, many negative).

The Bible has some astonishingly good social engineering and principles for fruitful living, which if enacted, would allow for a superior society. It's not all fear and heirarchies (although that's what it has very nearly become).

6. Actually the Bible is a collection of books. Some are very well written and beautiful. Others, not
so much. Song of Solomon and the Psalms come to mind for the former. Revelation and Paul's letters in the latter category.

As in, get some.

I'm an agnostic and think it's the Book of Books. Been nursing a mild Bible-as-literature obsession since '02. 'S great. So, please don't post again until you've had a decent amount of time to get hip. Your post hurts my eyes.

22. Eek, after numerous journeys through the Bible, I could never proclaim it as the "Book of books"
With so much other really great literature out there, I'd offer that so, so many other books qualify as a better read than the bible.

14. Don't you mean "worst collection of books"
The Bible isn't a single chronological narrative after all,

It's a collection of works taking from the Hebrew bible and New Testament literature.

15. It's fascinating
As much for what they don't say (but include without comment, such as Jesus refusing to see his own Mother). A couple of other books really opened it up for me, including "An Historian's Review of the Gospels," whose author I don't recall offhand.

20. "review": Not too bad for a bunch of desert fairy tales...
but the organization is very haphazard and it needs a better editor. There is no consistency between chapters and many of the tales contradict each other. Apparently the original tales have become corrupted over the passage of time, as some completely lack a plot.

The genealogies quickly become tedious and should have been presented in a graphic layout to avoid confusion. There also seems to be too many different translations, many of them rather poorly worded. It is noted that there are no source materials listed in the back of the book.

21. Well, I'm a Christian, so I suppose I can't say 'yes'.
Anyway, some parts are very well written. Isaiah is eloquent, if long winded. Amos is like a cantankerous old-school social justice liberal. Ezekiel reads like Harlan Ellison crossed with William Burroughs. Paul reads like a pursy-lipped old moralist, but with some moments of genuine tenderness for Timothy and others. The Book of James reads as if Ted Kennedy and Jimmy Carter had collaborated on a book of holy scripture.

Just because I'm not a Bible-thumper, doesn't mean I'm a Bible-basher. I prefer to bash the ones who use the Bible to bash, if you know what I mean... B-)

24. As an athiest I'll say
some of the books of the bible are great philosophy, entertaining storytelling and/or useful morality plays. But some parts of some books suck on multiple levels.

I would be far less critical of it if it wasn't taken literally, and if they recognized that it has a historical context that pretty much has not applied in quite a long time. It would also help if people recognized that it's an anthology of short stories from a bunch of different sources, not the literal words somehow writen by a immense formless entity.

I have no problem with reasonable and moderate Christians being inspired by this book, as long as they are willing to help us keep the Bible far away from law and public policy.

Blood, death, sex, violence, more sex, adventure, romance, more sex and violence, a bear mauling kids. Revelations alone is cooler than weekend on Pluto.

Fuck..it's the best book ever!!!

Just don't believe a word of it. :)

as long as the reader keeps it in it's historical context. But I'm waiting for the extended version to come out. You know, the one that has ALL the books of the bible. Mary Magdalene, Thomas, and others. Get me a director's cut and I'll become a believer.

It's got nothing on that sub-literate piece of crap entitled 'The Illuminati Trilogy", which (unfortunately) I think just as many take literally as people do The Bible.

I consider myself quite the literate person but the wisdom and depth contained within those pages far surpass any other work I've read in my life.

To each his own I guess.
