Guys: As a kid did you swim nekkid at the Y?

I was born in 1941.
I learned to swim at the local YMCA at around age 7 or 8.
Our progression was measured in classes of aquatic critters.
Tadpole, then Minnow, then Fish...and finally the coveted SHARK!

All us little boys swam naked.
I think the instructors wore trunks.

The pool surround was tiled and slicker than owl shit.
I remember it would get lubed up with water and we'd get a running start and then flop down on our butts and slide for MILES!

At the time, I didn't think much about it.
We were just little boys, and not very self conscious yet.
Kinda like puppies.

Looking back on it, the Nude Rule seems a bit...weird?
I think the reason given was hygiene.
We'd bring in a lot of germs on our bathing suits?
They couldn't be sure how clean they would be?

Anyone have a similar experience?
If so, what do you think about it now?
