NPR:
On The Media This American Life
Local - The People's Pharmacy (natural healing and homeopathy, edit: also drug news and drug interactions, drug trials and research reviews)
Other - The Meditation Podcast. (Makes a nice cooldown contrast to my cardio workout. :-)

5. I'm an avid digital talk listener, and I still don't think I listen to podcasts |
|
I somehow let that particular technology slip right by me -- when it seemed like I was asking someone to automatically download something to my computer, I figured I didn't want that -- is that, technically, what a podcast is?
Because I usually just go and download the mp3 of whatever I want to listen to, myself, so that there's no remote server just helping itself to my desktop thank you very much.
But what I recently discovered, was that audiobooks are a much more productive use of my listening time. There's actual substance, in-depth substance, instead of just little sound bites and interviews with authors *about* their books. And I've had enough of talk radio callers who just either keep saying the same thing, or keep repeating someone else's ignorance.
Audiobooks for me nowadays! Check your library, they've got tons more than ever before.

shows that you can download to listen to on your own time. In the case of On the Media, I like that show a lot. But here, it's broadcast over the radio at 6AM on Sundays. I'm not awake then. So, I download the podcast and listen to it later when I have time.
Oh, and anybody with a mic on their computer can create and distribute their own podcasts about whatever topic they like.

9. OK, well this might be just a technical question then |
|
butI have always taken the term "podcast" to strictly mean a form of software that, when subscribed to, automatically (non-attended) downloads the media to your computer when it becomes available -- not something that you download yourself (because then that's just downloading an audio file, which I do all the time, and is my preferred method of acquiring same)
Maybe the term has gotten a bit muddied though

as best I can describe it is this:
It is a recording of a "show" that you can download either manually, or automatically via iTunes and listen to on your computer, or iPod, or stereo if you have the proper connection.
All my podcasts are NPR or APR shows/segments that I dont always remember to listen to when they are on the radio, so I listen to them when I am at the computer because I have iTunes set to automatically download them for me when a new one becomes available.
There are probably hundreds of thousands of podcasts available, on any topic you can imagine, some local some international and everywhere inbetween.

12. OK, I'll try to explain this |
|
It's easier to explain sex, actually
I found it when I installed some free podcast software called "Juice" and started checking all the top 50 losts for things I can download.
SIF is sponsored by a Minneapolis adult botuique called "The Smitten Kitten" www.smittenkittenonline.com. I believe, but I am not certain, that there is a link to the show at that site.
I'm fairly old to sex, but I'm a podcasting newbie.
