Yesterday at the animal shelter, I saw the CUTEST pit bull.
I really wanted to take her home, but we can't afford her right now. She was a rusty brown color with golden eyes.

I hope someone falls in love with her enough to take her home and love her forever.

1. Most people don't understand how affectionate the pits are.
I used to volunteer at an animal shelter, and the pit bull wing was the saddest, because they were the most adorable dogs, but there was a state law that they could not be adopted out unless under very strict circumstances. Many of them had been injured in dog fights. In spite of that, about seventy percent were not violent dogs. It was very sad when they were euthanized.

And that is saying something.

I really hope someone with an affinity for pitties finds her and falls in love. She seemed to be such a sweet dog.

9. I'll say prayers for your pit bull.
Every once in a while one of our pitties would get rescued by a wonderful caring organization or person... But as you probably know, it is just so painful sometimes to lose those dogs you fall in love with, after trying to find them homes. It is one of the worst pains I know.

2. Is it an open intake ("kill") shelter?
If it is, and she's a good match for your family, if you adopt her, I'll pay for her food for the next 2 years.

If it helps you afford it, you've got my $$ commitment here for the world to see.

8. That is really generous.
I am the big softie in the house, not sure I could convince my husband that we "need" a dog in the family.

I am also not sure if it is a "kill" shelter or not. I am guessing it may be.

I am not sure how she would get along with the boikatz or vice versa. One of the boikatz has adjusted (we just got them about 6 weeks ago) but the other one is still struggling.

10. I'll also pay the adoption fee.
Maybe if your husband met her?

The cats might be a concern...she is a terrier. Usually, the pibble learns quickly once the claws come out.

You know what's best for your family. The offer is there.

I'd also be willing to call the shelter, and as a bona fide rescue, tell them you're pulling the dog for us. Wheel greasing at its finest.

The shelter has a policy of spaying/neutering all animals before they are adopted out.

34. I seriously like to help you save her- maybe pay the adoption fee?
I should have remembered that. The last stray that showed up here I had to take to the shelter because she was being attacked by my six dogs. When I found her a home the fee to "spring her" from the shelter was for spaying.

I am 100% serious about helping. I would really enjoy contributing to save a good dog.

22. Very generous.
It's up to KitchenWitch and how this dog may or may not fit in with her family. Only she knows how things would actually work out for (or not for) her situation. Hopefully, if ultimately it comes down to affording the dog, we've got some great DUers that will offset that cost.

26. If it works for you folks, great.
If he's skeptical of the offers of help, I would be happy to:

1. PM you my e-mail address that links to my rescue so my validity can be verified;

2. Call the shelter in advance, set up the release under my rescue's name and pay the adoption fee the moment you decide;

3. If need be, I'll drop ship 60 lbs of kibble to your door as a "down payment" on my pledge to pay for dog food;

4. Lastly, you adopt her, if you need a crate for the initial couple weeks, I'll FedEx you a PetSmart (or other local supply place) gift card to buy a crate.

If you decide to adopt this pitbull, drop me a PM and I'll send you my cell phone number. We'll hook it all up.

And if there's any doubt to my commitment, I've risked a LOT more to save a pitbull...

Good luck. I hope it all works out for everyone.

25. Yes, you are right.
It's not always easy to integrate a particular dog or breed into a family.

But if it works out, I want to help out!

It would really mean a lot to me, because I volunteered at a shelter where most of the pitties had to be killed, and it was really sad.

3. My youngest sister had a pit bull who was the sweetest dog in the world.
Tessla was wonderful when my nephew was born, and when the neighborhood kids came over, the would hug her, and pet her, and she licked them, wagged her tail, and was never, EVER mean.

I hate seeing those wonderful dogs turned into fighters.

12. they really don't deserve the bum rap that they get
there is a shelter here in Jefferson County, Table Mountain, unfortunately a kill shelter that has sooooo many pit bulls. No kidding, I would say that at least 3/4 of the dogs are pits. And they are all obviously pets, they are so sweet looking and very beautiful. This shelter has been dumped on due to breed restrictions in many cities in the Metro area.

One of our vet techs at my cat shelter used to be a manager there, and she was always bringing us cats that were slated for "death row". She knew that they were adoptable, they just needed a little more time.

I would take Fivegan up on his generous offer. The cats will put him in his place with one sharp claw to his snout. Just introduct him gradually. Have you ever seen Eli keep Charlie the coyote in his place at www.thedailycoyote.blogspot.com/

even though one of them is completely nuts, always running after her own tail, and the other had a broken leg that needed serious surgery....

..Neither of them would ever deliberately hurt anyone. (unless they were attacked).
...left alone, they are so neat, and kind..People are so frightened of em, and yet..they are just ..fine.

for her asap. These dogs are a LOT of dog. Very enegertic, and up for everything, stubborn and hilarious; they require a lot of attention too

My daughter's dog developed stranger aversion and other dog aversion at around 18 months and would unexpectedly attack if something scared him. We found a wonderful dog trainer who has helped us out a lot. He is improving daily.

He has a clear acrylic muzzle which allows him to drink while wearing it and eat small snacks so he can be rewarded while training. We call him techno dog when he wears it. He knows he can't use his teeth, so he is not going to attack something when he can't defend himself. That is when you can really tell he is really afraid or very nervous; he will sit next to you on leash and quiver.

but he is one loving dog.

32. It is a shame how many pits are at our shelters.
The puppies are crazy expensive, and people want to buy them to have fights, or so that the neighbors will think they are badass without any regard to the animal. Then, they end up in the shelter with little hope of being adopted because of the same reputation that makes people want them in the first place.

I feel sorry for the dogs. It isn't their fault.

Hope you are able to convince Mr KitchenWitch to take the bugger home.

37. We have 1 1/2 pit bulls
(one is a lab mix)

Very sweet dogs, very affectionate, but high maintenance

They really want to be with you all the time and want your constant attention and affection

They are playful and high energy - trips to the dog park are a must as are regular vigorous walks

As a breed they are friendly towards humans, but have a reputation for dog aggression. We see this in our older dog. We deliberately socialized the younger dog at an early age to other dogs - as a result she is very friendly to other dogs as well

And here is our young one

and our old man:

43. I usually worry more about the dog.
The kitties keep the pits in line around here...one hiss and the dogs are stuck to the ceiling. Our little pittie all but ended up on top of the fridge at my grandma's when the crotchety old calico (who now lives with us) got after him.

Not to say that you won't run into a dog that would make a quick snack of kitty, these are terriers we're dealing with...but by and large we've been able to integrate pibbles and cats, just need to work at it. It helps to have dog-savvy cats, or cantankerous old bats like Patches. I heard John Ashcroft believed calico cats were of the devil...after having been nailed by that cat one morning, I can see how that superstition got started. :D

First she'll start smoking and staying out late, then one day you'll find an Olive Garden container in her dog house, and you'll be in denial that it could happen to your dog, your sweetie. But your heart will shatter when you find a well-chewed picture of Tom Cruise bookmarking a slobbered-on copy of "Dianetics" hidden behind the Thomas Kincaide.

It's just not worth it. They're just a bad breed, ya know!

I realize I can't save them all. There isn't such a thing as a bad dog in my mind. Young or old, long haired or short. Pit bull to Heinz 57, there is NO dog that should be "put down" for the lack of a home.

I wish people who fail to spay & neuter their animals could see what happens to the poor things.
