Essential Jazz Fusion/ 60s and 70s Rock recommendations?
Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 09:35 PM by arundhatiroyfan
I have heard Mahavishnu Orchestra and Billy Cobham's solo albums. Great stuff. I am also a fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Toto etc. (I guess they are 70's, not sure) and would like to know what else is out there. Thank you in advance!

2. Bitches Brew is essential.
Also, A Tribute to Jack Johnson -- both are Miles Davis albums.

5. Interesting juxtaposition of oxymoron words - "essential" and "jazz fusion"

7. I'll give you something not exactly what you're looking for
Go check out the early 80's stuff that Jazz fusion guitarists Al DiMeola and Pat McLaughlin did with flamenco guitarist Paco DeLucia. It's an acoustic blend of Jazz and Classical that's really good stuff.

9. people say Weather Report, but I think the first Jaco Pastorius album "Jaco" is a lot better
I can't really stand any fusion-y stuff anymore, but I do like that record. Some of his other stuff is good too (oh, he was the bass player for Weather Report... maybe I was getting ahead of myself there).

In a really different vein, the first Jerry Garcia album is awesome. Amazing guitar playing combined with great singing and songs (a lot the stuff that became staples of what the Dead played in their live shows for the next two decades) and some weird freak-out things too.

Pat Martino's "Joyous Lake".

David Sancious' (Bruce Springsteen's keyboard player during the 70's) albums "Transformation: Speed of Love" and "True Stories".

Pat Metheny's first solo album, (with a young Jaco and Bob Moses) "Bright Size Life".

Mahavishnu's "Apocalypse" was a great, if slightly flawed, album. (with the London Symphony)

Billy Cobham's "Life & Times" featuring a young John Scofield on guitar.

The Dixie Dregs' "What If"

Most Alan Holdsworth albums.

Most Return to Forever albums.

Most Weather Report albums.
