Work just called and they're desperate for overtime help this weekend. Here's the dilemma, they've offered me a $100 Walmart gift card in addition to the extra pay. On a scale from 1-10 how evil would it be to take the gift card? That's like a week's worth of grocery money and, oh boy, I'm rationalizing...

1. Take the gift card and run. |
|
As long as they're paying you time and a half plus the gift card, take it. Assuming you want to go in this weekend, that is.

7. I don't see the dilemma...take the card. |
|
Wal-Mart sucks, but so what? The $100 has already been spent there to buy the card anyway, so you're just benefiting from your company's desperate need for workers.
I'd take the card and not feel bad at all about using it.

|
isn't there a website where you can trade a gift card you don't want for one that you do?

6. Nah. It's gonna get used at Wally World anyway. |
|
Might as well use it to stock up on pet food and toilet paper. I'd diplomatically let the administration know that that's a poor choice of incentive, though.

4. walmart may suck, but i don't think it would be that big a deal |
|
considering the company has already given them the money. if it's that bothersome to you, you could always donate the card to a homeless or women's shelter

9. Look at it this way. If you decide to work this weekend |
|
use the gift card with the knowledge that you're eating away additional profits they would otherwise get if you didn't use the card :)

I don't shop there, but if I get a gift card, I will damn well use it. The money's already in their coffers...

We are all guilty of occasional hypocrisy as essential needs dictate. Feel no guilt. At a later date talk to your supervisors about Wal-Mart in a way that will help them (not "make" them) understand your concerns. Don't slap the hand that feeds you after they just gave you a gift (because you'd then be ungrateful and a troublemaker in their eyes). A great time to do this is right after they give an excellent performance review (documentation can be your friend) or win Employee of the Month/Quarter/Year etc.
PS - my tersely worded suggestion is just my opinion. Your dilemma just caused me to pop into my manager language as soon as I began thinking "Oh no! How can we help deal with this without getting the OP into trouble!"

15. The card is already purchased, so the harm's done |
|
Claiming the goods with it, then takes $$$ away from them.

18. 1. If no one uses the gift card, Walmart makes an easy $100 profit. |
|
2. You didn't buy it, you're just using money someone else has already given to Walmart.
3. I promise I won't think any less of you, and I'm a MAJOR Walmart hater.
Do it!!! :D
