This is my dad when he was in his later 30's. This picture was taken in the 1950's, and I've spent the day improving it and removing the cluttered background. I did the best I could with it...maybe I'll keep working on it.

He never wore a beard, except for this occasion, which was some sort of beard growing contest, which he won.

He was a good man. Strong as an ox, but both a "gentle man" and a gentleman. He died in 1970 when he was way too young. He was a very hard worker. I miss him.

8. Thanks Gray...
I think if he lived in these times, he would be considered cool.

His main occupation was the demolition of buildings, back when they did it by hand.

He would sometimes hire these out of work guys for a few days to help him, and then he would bring them home for dinner. My mother would have a fit...not because he brought them home, but because she was never sure how much food to cook. If the guys had no place to sleep, he would let them sleep over.

And he loved the hippies for some reason. He befriended a couple....husband was a suit, wife was a hippy. She used to visit my mom when he was working. She used to breast feed her baby in our kitchen...this was a big deal for a young boy in the late 60's. I guess I had pretty liberal parents for the times.

Thank you for sharing it with all of us!

But, now I'm confused...

I just took a new one of myself, to share, but I'm not sure that's what you intended...

Did you want us to post our own pics?

35. This is my dog:
Mimsy. We got her several years ago after we had just put our black lab to sleep (he'd had a couple strokes and was in bad shape) and were still hurting pretty bad. We had made up our minds that we were NOT getting another dog. Then, a lady I know in my town asked if I wanted her dog. At first I said no, but the lady said " You just might end up with her anyway...I'm just going to drive her out in the country somewhere and drop her off!" Apparently Mimsy had snapped at one of her children after being picked up by the ears for the umpteenth time. (Go figure). I knew this lady would do just what she said, so I reluctantly took the dog. She fit right into the family and helped heal some very sore hearts.
Mimsy likes to burrow, and eat the boogers out of used Kleenexes. She's also a nervous piddler. If someone knocks on the door she barks like mad then pees all over. Sometimes she does both at the same time. That's as close as she comes to doing actual "tricks"...she also occasionally eats out of the compost pile and vomits in her kennel.
She loves to cuddle and likes to lay her head on your chest and look at you pitifully until you rub her. She gets along great with my kids, and with her playmate, Maisie the bunny.

49. This is the oldest family photo I have
Based on the format (a "Carte De Visite") and the apparent age of the subject, I'm guessing its is from about 1872 (Carte De Visites were already becoming a lot less popular but any younger and the subject would have been too young for this picture). This is a picture of my great great grandfather (my mother's mother's mother's father). He disowned my great grandmother when she eloped with my great grandfather.

This is the women he disowned with the offending husband, circa 1902 from a tintype:

I've been cleaning them up and we have a old family portrait wall in our living room with framed cleaned up copies hung. I love these older photos, too, especially knowing who they are and being able to see my family in a historical context.

I've posted these before but what the hey:

My mother, her mother, and my father:

My mother's parents (both deceased) and my father's parents (Gramma is still alive at almost 98):

My great grandfather on Dad's side, as a wee lad:

I collect family portraits but most of them are very large and in antique frames so I can't scan them.

72. too large in antique frames
We've had some success with taking digital photos while the portraits are still framed. The challenge is getting an angle where you don't get a reflection from the glass. Also, I've taken some larger photos and, after carefully removing them from the antique frames, scanned them in parts and merged the parts together in photo shop. I did that with this photo which was about 14 x 9:

73. Wow. You've done an excellent job with that one! Is that your family, or
someone else's? I have never worked with photoshop or anything like it, but you give me ideas. Thanks!

I've worked a decent amount in Photoshop.

That's my mom's dad (the boy standing between his parents) and his whole family - circa 1902

74. My granddad

My granddad is sitting on the right wing (facing this way) of the plane. I'm not sure when this picture was taken. He flew 70 successful missions during WWII.

He had a massive stroke last weekend. Last night he passed away. RIP granddad.

This is me and my granddad last summer with my kids.

75. I'm tired of posting the one from this year, so I'm
posting ya one from two years ago, with a story attached:

He and I met on a message board that dealt with situations where someone from our past (childhood sweetheart) showed up many years later. He and I were dealing with a very similar situation where the old flames couldn't get the hint that we weren't interested, ie. stalking.

He and I ended up on the phone one night. The rest is history. He moved from Chicago to be with me here in the Garden State 2 weeks ago. The picture you are looking at is from our very first face-to-face meet-up. Love at first sight (and 7 weeks of nonstop phone calls). :)

He smoked cigars normally.

The pipe, the hat, etc. were props for the beard contest photo.

82. Hey...so cool...
He reminds me of the a certain archetype of the American male--both in the image and your stories. I don't know, lets say Walt Whitman, Hemingway, Ken Kesey. Working men in the American grain who celebrate work, spirit and American-ness in their every-day lives.

Very cool to see this. And to know where you get steel-wool beards from....

I mean you've posted about how heavy *your* beard is. How it dulls new razors in seconds. How even NASA is stymied by your hirsute manliness.
