Does anyone else HATE NPR fundraising? |
|
I'm listening to NHNPR and they have been screeching at me all morning.

1. Fundraising in general SUCKS to hear. |
|
A local radio station (not public broadcasting) does a drive about 2 times a year for the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, which is a very good cause....except it's a great classic rock station, and during this drive, they get in about 3 songs an HOUR, and the rest is all ten-minute-long interviews with families. I feel terrible for the kids, but I don't have money of my own, never mind to give to anyone else, and frankly, I listen to the radio to hear music, not endless blather.

3. Ours local station only does it |
|
during the morning and evening drive times. It's worked out pretty good. They still get the pledges they need or close to it coz folks appreciate that the programming the rest of the day isn't constantly disrupted.

4. As opposed to the constant barrage of commercials 365 days/year |
|
for shoddy programming and results in massive Clear Channel profits?
Hmm... I'll put up with it a few times per year without complaint.

5. At least NPR carries its normal programming during pledge drive |
|
unlike PBS, which carries endless repetitions of two-hour talks by self-help gurus and wallpaper music with pictures to try to attract people who wouldn't normally watch public TV.

6. I don't like it either. |

We have a PBS station with frequent beg-a-thons.
We have an NPR FM station with frequent beg-a-thons.
And we have a Pacifica FM station with frequent beg-a-thons.
Worthy causes, but ........ :banghead:

7. I remember when it only used to be once a year. |
|
Now, here in SC it's 4 times a year. Might as well just have commercials.

But every once in a while, when I don't know one is on, I'll turn on NPR and then get a fit of the giggles because they use the old-fashioned telephone "brrinnng! brrinnng!" in the background while they're begging. Once upon a time it fooled us into thinking dozens of people were calling in pledges, but it just sounds quaint now.

10. It's not my favorite time of year, certainly, but I can understand why |
|
they need to do it, so I try not to let it bug me too much. One of these times I'm actually gonna have to become a member, on one of those days where a contribution of any amount gets you a year's membership - don't have tons of money to spend on stuff like that
