Computer (Internet) Problem - Need Help
what would cause this? I have Road Runner, all Internet sites come up, except for CNN.COM and GOOGLE.COM. This has been happening for a few days, just on my home network (3 pc's). I haven't yet gone to a neighbor's house with Road Runner to verify if they also have this issue.

Would this be a Road Runner issue? A router issue?

Thanks for any help.

1. When you day they don't come up, what happens?
404 Error page? Timeout?

2. Nothing happens
and if I do a trace route, it hangs there also. Only on those two sites.

6. What do you mean by "hangs there"?
The precise behavior may be important.

3. Must be RR, I've been griping about it to DH for a couple days
most recently this morning. I was only able to get to CNN once today after repeated tries..just tried it again and can't get it. Google works fine for me though.

The CNN issue has been a problem for a while now..at least a few weeks for me.

5. And can you trace to those host names?
From your C:\ prompt, try "tracert cnn.com" to see whether you're:

1. able to resolve the name to an IP address, and
2. able to reach something like that device name.

7. Trace and Ping both produce nothing..
and I know its not a CNN or Google since I reach them fine at work.

8. I think there must be something happening when you try a trace or ping...
...or it's your computer that's broken. Do you get an "unable to resolve..." message?

9. As I said,
I have a home network of 3 PCs. None can get to CNN.COM or GOOGLE.COM

Pinging cnn.com <64.236.16.52> with 32 bytes of data:

10. Sounds like it could be a firewall issue unintentionally blocking those sites.
Check your security software, whatever it might be, and your router as well. Maybe try plugging one of the computers directly into the modem and trying the sites.

12. That fixed it!
I took the broadband cable out of the Linksys router, put it in the back of my PC, and viola, CNN and Google are back up.

What would cause anything in the Linksys router to block these two sites??

BTW, I'm embarrased to say I work in the IT field :(

13. so you were getting DNS resolution, but no response from CNN.
What did your traces look like when the problem occurred? (No need to give away any static IP address to Agent Mike). Did your own router answer? Did any device beyond answer?

14. nothing on a trace
just my 192.1.1 etc then the * timeout messages.

I unplugged the router, plugged it back in after 10 seconds, put the cable back in the router and everything is OK now.

Have no idea why it was only happening on a few sites, all other sites (including this one) came up OK.

Thanks for the help!

15. OK do the following two things and this issue should resolve
First unplug your cable modem for 1 minute and then plug it back in. This should ensure it's got the most up to date information, including the proper DNS servers. This sounds like a DNS issue so it's possible they have changed servers and your modem hasn't gotten the change yet. If that doesn't work and if you are running windows XP or vista, right click on your network connection and select repair. That should clear out your cache and renew all the local information.
