Five Random Questions for a Saturday afternoon:
1. If cost were no object, what one extravagant piece of jewelry would you buy for yourself or someone else?
2. If you had a chance to visit another continent, which country would you most want to visit?
3. What name did you pick for yourself most often when playing make-believe as a child?
4. Would you rather canoe or have a speedboat?
5. What's one talent/ability you wish you had, but just don't?

I'd not buy anything new; I'd have my mom's ring repaired. I lost a diamond out of it, so I need to buy a new one and have all the points on the ring re-done so I don't lose any more :-(

I'd love to visit Thailand

I usually picked Jane as a name when I was a kid - short and plain. I didn't like my name.

Canoe, no question. Preferably in the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota.

Singing. I can sort of carry a tune, given a large enough bucket, but don't have a great voice at all.

How about you all???

1. My five:
1. I'd love to buy a huge diamond pendant necklace for my wife.
2. I'd love to visit Argentina in South America, and Egypt in Africa.
3. Steve Austin, the $6 Million-Dollar Man. B-)
4. Speedboat. Not very green, I know, but this is just fantasy.
5. I wish I had carpentry skills. I don't know why, but sometimes I wish I had wood-working talent so I could make my own furniture, repair the fence around my backyard, make toys for little kids, and so much more.

12. Woodworking is a lot of fun...I'm pretty much of a novice, but Hubby
is quite good.
I've seen a lot of similarity between planning/executing a woodworking project and a sewing project - it's kinda weird, but it's cool - that's one thing I CAN do, is sew! :-)

bandit, but knitting just eludes me.
My youngest is pretty good at it, but I'm hopeless!

2. Here are mine
1) I love sapphires, so probably a beautiful sapphire pendant
2)Australia
3) usually something like Katrina (Katt for short)
4) Have done both, prefer speedboat (or at least power boat)
5) Painting. My grandfather painted some really nice pictures and I have no smidgeon of that talent.

3. Okay...
1. If cost were no object, what one extravagant piece of jewelry would you buy for yourself or someone else?

Diamonds are a no no to me, so I'll be selfish on this one. Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. Middle of the road expensive.

2. If you had a chance to visit another continent, which country would you most want to visit?

England. I have family there.

3. What name did you pick for yourself most often when playing make-believe as a child?

Shazam.

4. Would you rather canoe or have a speedboat?

Speedboat. 49' Nortech Supercat (still pretending money is no object)

5. What's one talent/ability you wish you had, but just don't?

Perfect throwing arm. That ability would get me an MLB contract where I could then afford #1, 2 and 4.

4. Here's mine
1. If cost were no object, what one extravagant piece of jewelry would you buy for yourself or someone else?
My husband gave it to me for our 11 yr anniversary. It is a three diamond ring. Not gaudy big or tiny tiny, it is just right.

2. If you had a chance to visit another continent, which country would you most want to visit?
Fiji. I will only go when I look good in a swimsuit. Otherwise what's the point.

3. What name did you pick for yourself most often when playing make-believe as a child?
Suzy Q. I really wanted my name changed to that. Now I am glad that I have my given name.

4. Would you rather canoe or have a speedboat?
Speedboat. I love to travel fast.

5. What's one talent/ability you wish you had, but just don't?
Determination in the face of adversity. Basically sticking with something even though life throws things at me to get me off track.

5. My answers
1. If cost were no object, what one extravagant piece of jewelry would you buy for yourself or someone else?

I'm not real big on extravagant jewelry - however, a nice antique ladies pocket watch (which would probably be a brooch type watch that I would have converted) would be nice.

2. If you had a chance to visit another continent, which country would you most want to visit?

So many countries, so little time. If I just had one, I think I'd pick Italy and look for long-lost relatives.

3. What name did you pick for yourself most often when playing make-believe as a child?

Kate. It's still the name I give for my order at Jamba Juice. :P

4. Would you rather canoe or have a speedboat?

Neither. Water and I don't mix.

5. What's one talent/ability you wish you had, but just don't?

I'd love to be able to sing...

16. Okay
1. I don't know. I like jewelry, but I like inexpensive, funky items, usually with beads. And nobody I know wears expensive jewelry either. I might buy Mr. MG a new watch.

2. Great Britain. I've been there twice, but only to England. I want to see Ireland, Scotland, and Wales--plus more of England.

3. Lisa. My name is old-fashioned, and at the time Lisa was current and popular, and I wished I had a popular name like that.

4. Canoe, no question. I don't like ripping up nature; I like slipping into it instead.

5. I'd like to be able to play the piano. We could never afford one when I was little, so I never did take lessons because I had noplace to practice. I learned to play the guitar instead.

24. Canoes are great. We need to get another; someone stole ours
last winter, probably some four-wheelers or snowmobilers going down the river when it was frozen - we found the cut cable that had attached it to a tree when the snow melted last year. Or maybe poachers - we've had "hunters" on our land without permission before. *sigh* Pissed me off.

22. Well...
1) This one is tough. I'm not really one for jewelry, so I can't say what I'd buy or who I'd give it to.
2) I've been doing some research on Kyrgyzstan for a term paper, so maybe I'd go there to check it out. I hear the landscape is really stunning.
3) I like my name, so I just used it in all my imaginary games.
4) Probably a speedboat. Nothing against canoes, but you can explore farther and faster with an outboard.
5) I'm gonna say time travel, since this is all a flight of fancy. I'd love to grab a history book and go talk some sense into a few historical personages, paradoxes be damned.

35. Again with the historical research...
Lately I've been working on the Munich Crisis of 1938, so... I'd probably tell Czechoslovakian President Eduard Benes not to believe anything the other powers were telling him. I would like to sit in on the cabinet deliberations of September 21st and explain the following:

Germany is not going to stop with the Sudetenland. Cave now, and they'll just swallow up the rest of your country within five months. So, you might as well threaten war with Germany, because you've got nothing to lose. Maybe France and the USSR will actually honor their commitments to your country, maybe not. Even if they don't, Germany might back down out of fear or you could prompt a coup against Hitler from among some German staff officers who didn't want to spark a European war. The worst thing that could happen is that your country will become Germany's doormat, which is going to happen anyway even if you cave to the Munich Diktat. Therefore, slug it out with Hitler. At least you'll save your dignity instead of going down as one of the most spineless worms of the 20th Century (I'm looking at you, Benes).

Then I'd teleport over to Britain and try to persuade them that Germany's armed forces were actually less powerful than everybody thought and that Britain and France could actually deal Germany quite a blow while Hitler's forces would be tied down for at least two weeks in Bohemia. See, contrary to popular conception, Chamberlain's appeasement policy was not grounded in base cowardice, but rather in a firm conviction that Germany's military might actually surpassed that of Britain (among other things), therefore making war a losing proposition for London any way they sliced it. In 1938, when Chamberlain avoided war, Britain and France combined were actually more powerful than Germany. By 1939, when war actually broke out, Hitler had made good use of that time by aligning with the USSR and continuing his rearmament program, to the point where the Reich actually outweighed the western powers. Therefore, I'd tell Chamberlain that war's inevitable, you might as well start it now when you could actually kick ass and get it overwith sooner.

Yes, that's esoteric, but it's been on my mind a lot lately due to my schoolwork.

37. Mine
1. If cost were no object, what one extravagant piece of jewelry would you buy for yourself or someone else?

I wouldn't. My watch cost maybe $80, and it's more than enough. Nobody in my family much cares for jewelry, and getting such an expensive piece of jewelry for my girlfriend would DEFINITELY send the wrong signal.

2. If you had a chance to visit another continent, which country would you most want to visit?

China, preferably during this year's Games.

3. What name did you pick for yourself most often when playing make-believe as a child?

The Joker.

4. Would you rather canoe or have a speedboat?

Speedboat.

5. What's one talent/ability you wish you had, but just don't?

The ability to draw. I couldn't make a circle with a compass.

2. Whatever continent Greece currently occupies...
3. My own a real person.
4. Absolutely canoe!

40. I'm strange??
I don't like, wear or want jewelry. I would sell whatever I bought to buy a Tom Ford suit. I like bespoke. Suits are kinda like jewelry.

I'd like to go to India. Goa, maybe.

I don't remember but whatever it was most likely reflects a non-comprehension of normal naming conventions. Truck Rambo and Alien Steve come to memory. I asked my mom and she said I used to pick Julie...a lot. Apparently, I wanted to be a girl. I mean why should they get the cool dresses while I got stuck with itchy wool pants. Suddenly my like of kilts makes more sense.

Canoe. Actually, rowboat. I want manly biceps, triceps and chest dammit.

like jewelry.

Always regretted that it was among the countries we didn't get to visit when we were in Europe.

52. Thanks for the questions! My answers...
1. If cost were no object, what one extravagant piece of jewelry would you buy for yourself or someone else? I always wanted one of those Movado (sp?) watches... the one with a black face and a diamond at the 12. I think they are so elegant.

2. If you had a chance to visit another continent, which country would you most want to visit? France

3. What name did you pick for yourself most often when playing make-believe as a child? I don't remember ever doing that.

4. Would you rather canoe or have a speedboat? Speedboat.

5. What's one talent/ability you wish you had, but just don't? I wish I could sing. Totally tone-deaf.

in Paris years ago, which wasn't NEARLY enough, and spent more time in other areas of the country, which was awesome...would love to go back.

1. If cost were no object, what one extravagant piece of jewelry would you buy for yourself or someone else?

I'm not big into jewelry actually. What I'd really like to get (though it is impossible) are my Nana's rings that were stolen from her drawer at the nursing home the night before she died. My mother was devastated.

2. If you had a chance to visit another continent, which country would you most want to visit?

Europe

3. What name did you pick for yourself most often when playing make-believe as a child?

Susan

4. Would you rather canoe or have a speedboat?

59. what a fun game, grannylib!
Okay-
#1 jewelry is not a big thing for me, but I love tanzanite, specifically, the deepest hue around, almost a purple.

#2 I have two. I was a travel agent in another life, and I used to drool over http://www.buddybombard.com/index.php Buddy Bombards tours in a hot air balloon or in a skiff on Europes waterways. I have seen much of Europe, but to see it from a balloon would be heaven.
If not that, I have always wanted to see Tahiti, Bora Bora and Moorea. I would stay at one of those hotels on stilts with a coffee table that has glass directly into the ocean for viewing the fish. I got my diver's certification a couple of years ago and I've been told that it is one of the best places to dive.

#3 Dawnie

#4 canoe- so that I can encounter wildlife and appreciate the serenity of nature.

#5 to be able to dance well. Let's just say that I have two left feet.

61. Cool thread!
Okay.....

1. Honestly, I can't see myself buying jewelry - nothing extravagant, anyway. My birthstone is aquamarine, so probably a ring with an aquamarine stone.

2. I'm half Polish, half German - would love to go check out my roots. :)

3. Priscilla - I always loved that name!

4. Speedboat - always enjoyed water sports.

5. I would LOVE to be a hairdresser. I wanted to do that when I graduated high school, but my parents talked me out of it.

62. 1) I would buy an extravagent amulet made of enough food and water to feed to hungry.
I would give it to the land, co-incidentally nearby to people without food. And then look in the other direction.

2)Hmmm, can I pick Europa? Not actually a continent (and in fact a moon).

3) I didn't. Oddly enough.

4) A canoe.

5) I have enough. I'm content.

1. I can't even begin to think of something I would want. Maybe something beautiful and sparkly for my mom.

2. I'm going to interpret this as a continent I haven't already visited, and in that case the answer would be Africa. I would love to see Victoria Falls.

3. Wolfie.

4. A canoe would get a lot more use around here.

5. I wish I could play drums. And sing. And be skinny.

70. Interesting questions.
1. If cost were no object, what one extravagant piece of jewelry would you buy for yourself or someone else?

Goodness, I've been sitting here for quite awhile considering this one. I seriously do not know. I suppose a "mother's ring." I wouldn't mind having a ring with all of my children's birthstones in it.

2. If you had a chance to visit another continent, which country would you most want to visit?

I have never been to Asia or Australia. I would like to see China or New Zealand. Well, I'd like to see both but you're making me pick so I guess New Zealand. I speak the language.

3. What name did you pick for yourself most often when playing make-believe as a child?

I don't remember. But if I could go back in time to play these childhood games again it would be Eleanor for Eleanor of Aquitaine.

4. Would you rather canoe or have a speedboat?

canoe. Life if fast enough as it is.

5. What's one talent/ability you wish you had, but just don't?

dancing. I wish I could dance. ballroom dance, ballet, jazz, swing, doesn't matter. My body wants to move when it hears music but when it tries...not so much.
