I just talked to my brother. He's taking my Mom to the ER. For those of y'all that don't know, she has ALS, and this morning she choked when she was taking her vitamins, and now her breathing is really bad. I could hear her in the background over my cell phone, it sounds like she has a lot of fluid in her lungs. She doesn't want to go, but I told him to force her. I'm really scared. :(

Add to that that my Dad's been in the hospital for 2 months now...fuck!

Vibes, hugs, etc etc, please. :(

She says this has happened before and it's just phlegm, and that it will pass. Sigh. I told my brother to monitor her, and if it appears to be getting worse, to push the emergency responder box button (which we normally have for my Dad, actually) and to let the ambulance come without telling her. I wish I was there...I feel helpless.

It's actually a good idea to call the rescue squad rather than taking her yourselves. It's like getting the ER to come to her more quickly.

her body well enough to have made the right decision ( refusing to get help).
But checking in with her MDs certainly might help alleviate the stress for all of you.

Have you talked with your mom, too?
If anything, maybe your brother can get her in to her doc first thing Monday morning...?
Without breaking patient/doctor confidentiality, he CAN call the doc
(even today...his service should be able to get him to do a call back),
and report to the doctor what is going on. Maybe the doc can convince your mom to at least go in for a check up tomorrow.

If your brother thinks it's as serious as you (the both of you) perceive it to be, could he call for EMTs to come out to the house? He can make that call based on his observations.
I would go so far as to say that his observations and reports to you are on the money as compared to your mom's denial of the seriousness of her current condition.
