Has anyone noticed that the Keith Olbermann theme is from Beethoven's 9th?
Is it my imagination, or is that Countdown theme borrowed from the second movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony? Apologies if this is already common knowledge. It's a great piece of music! :bounce:

1. I'm pretty sure this is common knowledge, but only to those
who have seen the show and know Beethoven 9.  I'd bet that everyone else just knows it as Olbermann's theme.

2. I didn't know that but then
I wouldn't know Beethoven's 9th if it bit me in the ass.

Thanks for the info. It's good to learn new things.

and I heard somewhere that this choice is an homage to Edward R Murrow, whose b'casts also used this musical quote.

Anybody know?

It is extraordinary music...I am a big fan of Beethoven's 5th, 7th, and 9th symphonies.

:hi:

4. I also remember it from a 1960's/70's evening news - the Huntley/Brinkley News Hour?
I don't remember exactly which one, but without looking, I think it was either Huntley Brinkley or whoever did the NBC national news hour right after the locals.

6. yes, they used the "Molto vivace" (2nd mvmt) as their theme
1960s, The Huntley-Brinkley Report

over at wikipedia...
The six-note introduction to the second movement had been featured on NBC News programs as early as the Huntley-Brinkley Report of the 1950s. The Huntley-Brinkley Report also featured a longer section of the movement during the end credits. It still survives on NBC's cable network, MSNBC, most prominently, in remixed form, on Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

5. Some shampoo commercial has been using it, too.
And I always think, "Dammit, stop using Keith's theme!" even though I know where it comes from. ;)

16. Forgive my ignorance
But is Beethoven's 9th also referred to as the Moonlight Sonata?

I myself have not seen any of Olbermann's shows.

17. NO!
Beethoven's 9th is a 3-movement symphony, with choral part; lasts around 1 hour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2AEaQJuKDY&feature=related (part 1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSEqQsAXbJw&feature=related (part 2)

sonata = 'song,' and is piano song, lasts less than 10 minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQVeaIHWWck

24. And such a wonderful piece of music.
The Boston Symphony Orchestra played the whole 9th in the Public Garden--or was it the Common?--for its 100th Anniversary. What a great evening that was!!
