Today I Went To A Pre-Colombian Market
didn't do any shopping, but spent a little time imagining the plaza and market areas and the hard life that people had then.

Even in that place, the elite had a part of the area and the rest had their area. The river was used as the place to move goods. Trade was done and things like Conch shell jewelery, and things from the Gulf of Mexico have been found there. It was a large capital of that time for the natives of that era. Their society ended and another took over.

It is amazing how societies come and go through history and what happens to end, and start them. The elites in this society apparently were not different than any other. They kept their power through intimidation and military might.

I sometimes think that history does indeed repeat itself over and over in different incarnations.

1. I assume you are NOT in Arkansas?
Sorry if I missed that you were traveling. I have become interested in some pre-Columbian art while doing research for an art project I am teaching. I don't know much about the sociology of the time, but the art is fascinating.

Yes, it is amazing how many very complex societies with incredible art and architecture have completely disappeared. I'm sure there are many lessons to be learned in studying their rise and fall.

Hope you are having a great time! :hi:

3. On the border
http://www.spiro.lib.ok.us/mounds.htm

they refer to it in the center as pre-Columbian

it was interesting but not very well developed and actually very little excavation has been done there since like the 1960's

6. OK, my mistake....
I thought you were in Mexico! (shucks!)

There are Indian mounds near us too, but I have never visited them. Thanks for the information. Maybe I should go!

4. Spiro Mounds

and it was nice to get out, but really requires a lot of imagination to see what they say was there because it is just covered with grass, trees and probably Kudzu :P

8. The wheel is reinvented every generation I believe
and after a certain amount of time a society gets complacent and it falls, that's what I've concluded.

I fear we are that complacent right now and have given our lifeblood away.

I pictured you in Mexico or Central America.
