How vapid and desperate for approval does one have to be to RENT a designer handbag? |
|
Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 11:43 PM by KitchenWitch
:wtf: http://www.bagborroworsteal.com/Good fucking grief. The only designer handbag I own is a Coach bag, and I got it for 10 bucks at the thrift store.

Now, that's pretty desperate, IMHO!
I have two Coach bags...one I bought second-hand from a girlfriend many years ago, and the other was a gift from my husband...
:wtf: indeed...

I wouldn't buy any current Coach bag...
They have moved away from the solid leather with the good brass fittings they used to use, to cheap fabrics and crap like that...
PLUS they cost more than the good old bags!
Never again will I buy one...

44. Yup. I still use my military purse. |
|
Plain black leather, built like a tank, just the right size. The thing will outlast me.
On the other, for casual affairs, a Wal-Mart plastic bag works just fine.
I can think of many other things I'll spend that kind of money on than a frackin' handbag.

pitbulls are sorely misunderstood. I can thank our own flvegan for raising my awareness.
It's true that my dog's head looks more boxy in the picture than it really is. His head shape is more like a pointer breed's (think Vizsla or German Shorthair.)

|
I have a few of the bags they list, which can be had for a couple month's "rent" ... but a lot of them are gagalicious. I've seen nicer purses at TJ Max ... where they often do have very good purses.

I'm using a padded bag that is meant to hold refrigerated items!
My brother advised me to not buy one of those expensive leather bags that scream "expensive laptop inside!"
Works for me!

The Rotary Club promotes an ethical guideline, The Four-Way Test:
1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
I maintain they should add a fifth:
5. Does it make a LICK of SENSE?
Seriously. If you are renting designer handbags, or painting your cow to win the state fair, or are running people off the road to take celeb photos, haven't you gone completely off the fucking deep end?

|
Near the intersection of Olympic and Los Angeles St. The alley (it's an actual alley) behind Santee Street opens up on weekends, and (on Saturday mornings especially) THAT is where you can find the knockoff designer goodies. Some of it's extremely well-made, some not so much. You'll be able to find the good stuff easily.

There are areas with just fabric stores, bead stores, button stores, bridal stores, church clothing stores, etc. Also just north there is the floral district where you get the cheapest flowers you can find, but you have to go early in the morning.

I can think of one very good reason to rent one of these purses: if you were actually going to buy one. (If you look at the referenced site, you'll find they'll sell you the items you're renting.)
My wife loves purses, and she goes to places like TJ Maxx and Ross Dress For Less (where they have designer purses cheap) to get hers. And normally, she'll spend $15-$20 on one, carry it for a few days and decide it's not QUITE what she wants. Onto the shelf it goes, where it sits forever. If she was buying $500-$1000 purses, she'd probably do the same shit. But if she could rent the purse for a week as kind of a test drive, she'd know that once she loaded the purse up with all the things she carries in one she couldn't get her car keys out.

A) It is smarter to take money from the rich than to take it from the poor.
B) Where do I get the capital together to start my own rent-designer-shoes store online, because I *know* there's a market, clearly?

|
Edited on Mon Mar-31-08 12:42 PM by pitohui
i have closets and boxes full of them, i am the imelda of handbags, it's just awful
the only good thing i can say in my defense is that i have actually spent very little money on this sick, twisted obsession because somehow handbags seems to fall into my hands or jump off the shelf at thrift stores or bargain tables -- i've paid as little as 25 cents for some of them, received others for the price of just taking them away -- but still!
i'm afraid to count how many i have, i'm afraid i would discover that i have a different handbag for every day of the year
it's sick, sick, sick
i do get a lot of compliments on my unique bags tho, i just need to cut short the stories associated with some of them, nobody cares that i found that handbag in a market in johannesburg, south africa, too much information!
no, i'm afraid i don't loan or rent out MY handbags, i just...no, i need them all somehow, as i said, it's some kind of sickness :-)

43. So cynical. Keats would beat you around the head and neck with a rubber duck. |
|
If someone who can't afford to buy the beauty that so moves them, who are you to deny them the temporary rental of happiness? Sure, there are those who buy and sell beauty simply for lust and attention, but even so, why criticize their vulgar motives? Is not life short? Should not harmless joy be sought wherever possible, even by those less economically fortunate? Aren't we all simply leasing every item we believe we own, until our death renders all definitions of ownership nonsensical?
'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.'
"A thing of beauty is a joy for ever: Its loveliness increases; it will never Pass into nothingness; but still will keep A bower quiet for us, and a sleep Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing"
