Dith Pran has died.
I was surprised to see that no one had posted on the death of Dith Pran, the photojournalist whose life was the basis of the film "The Killing Fields".

I met Dith Pran when he spoke at a convocation at Carleton College in 1986. There was a meet and greet after his speech, and Paul Wellstone introduced me to Mr. Dith.

He was a soft-spoken gentleman.

He will be missed.

I had tears in my eyes at the end of the movie, when I saw it in 1984/85

He is truly a hero.....

4. I was completely unaware of the history until he spoke
at my college and after meeting him, I saw the movie that night on campus.

I was amazed at his strength and courage.

7. I had a very sheltered childhood, and "The Killing Fields" just
stunned me. That, and "Platoon" (whatever you think of it) really, really were eye-openers for me; until those movies, I had no idea that that sort of thing even happened. Or, I knew about the various wars, but in an abstract way; the movies made it more real, as they visualized the horrible events man has purposefully engaged in.

RIP, Dith Pran. Seemed like an extraordinary and brave man.

10. I met the man who played him in "The Killing Fields"...
...Dr. Haing S. Ngor. He, too, suffered terribly under the Khmer Rouge, losing his wife in the process. In time, he came to America and won an Oscar for his acting in "The Killing Fields," only to be murdered in the 1990s in Los Angeles, thanks to mindless criminal thugs. I interviewed many people during my years as a journalist. He's the only one who ever ended up murdered. I'll never forget that very pleasant day I spent with this brave man, a man of peace who had seen so much suffering and violence, and who gave me so much insight into the life and the world of Dith Pran. I'll say a prayer this day for Dith Pran and Dr. Haing S. Ngor.
