Poll question: Favorite Southern visionary artist.
I mean the non-professionally-trained "naive" or "outsider" artists of the American South.

1. Howard Finster's Paradise Garden

was less than twenty miles from me and I taught in Summerville. Paradise Garden was officially in Pennville, which is a community that's kind of a suburb of Summerville, itself a small town. The kids in Summerville laughed at him, of course, but were kind of fond of him.

Of course, most of his work there was sold off some time before he died, thought last I heard, the family still ran a Finster business out of the original old house at the site.

Howard was an interesting guy, a fairly authentic eccentric, though he dot more commercial in his later years. He'd still preach to anyone who'd listen. I have a lot of photos of him from the site, video, too, and several pieces of his artwork, couple of books about him.

2. I have a nice woodcutting he did of Einstein.
I love his paintings and drawings, but I could never afford them. The woodcuttings are more in my range.

Nonetheless, I voted for Legge.

is what got me interested in Howard Finster.

On Edit:
(1) Howard Fineman? What was I thinking? I spend too much time on DU.
(2) Check out some of the pictures by "Mr. Hooper" from Nashville:

I assume you mean the Rev. Finster?

On edit: he also did an R.E.M. cover.

7. Well, I was thinking more along the lines of painters...
...but nothing wrong with Faulkner! Read some Flannery O'Connor while you're at it!
