Thinking of buying an old house in Wallkill, NY. Any advice?...
...I'm just getting to know the area. It's an old Victorian farmhouse without the farm. Just curious if any DU'ers know the area and have thoughts about it.

1. under one million or over a mill?
I live in Newburgh... not too far away...

Wallkill is close enough to commute to the city (NYC), but is still very rustic.

5. Under, WAY under...
...It's a 19th-century fixer-upper on Hoagerburgh Road. We're thinking of it as a labor-of-love project. (It may be more than we can handle.) I dig the mountains, and the rustic quality of that area in general. I don't love the fact that developers have carved up many farms in the area and built McMansions on them, many of which remain unsold in the current economic climate. I know New Paltz a little bit. We just drove through Newburgh for the first time the other day-- we were on Broadway, but didn't see much else of the town. I didn't really get a sense of it.

2. By the way, "My Place" on Rt. 207 in New Windsor is the closest
Steeler bar to Wallkill.

4. My family is all buried in Phillipsburgh
actually one branch of the family lived on the cemetary and were caretakers.
not in the house that's there now but in another one they knocked down

and my cousins live in Middletown.
They used to be dairy farmers until the elder cousin got sick....

Go to Soon's Orchard for apples and pumpkins (we have been going for over 40 years)
and the BEST chocolate chips cookies homemade by Scotty's bakery.....

There are so many stories my Mom told while we were driving around....

anyway

it's beautiful up there... and a pretty nice golf course if you play....

good luck!!!

8. It is a beautiful area.
My dad goes on retreats to Wallkill every couple of months. He lives in NYC and loves being up there.

9. It's a great area.
We moved from Shokan (outside of Woodstock) to Maine about 3 yrs ago. My husband and I both went to New Paltz and got married at Mohonk Mtn House. He grew up in Dutchess County. I was born there, but bounced around from NY to Texas because of my mom and dad's divorce. There is so much to do around the area as others in the thread have said. The rail trail is great for hiking and biking, Mohonk and Minnewaska are a lot of fun too. My husband climbs, so the Gunks were pretty much his life. We miss it a lot. Our whole family still lives in Dutchess County.
