1. I like various stuff by several of the incarnations
Probably the late-sixties through about '73 Beach Boys output is my favorite material overall. So my favorite line-up is probably the first choice, although I think both Brian Wilson and Bruce Johnston were simultaneously involved in some of the studio recordings from that era.

(I was tempted to vote for that Blondie Chaplin-era just 'cause I doubt it will get any supporters, and I do like the Holland album. "Sail on Sailor" is awesome, even if it doesn't quite "sound" that much like the Beach Boys!)

3. Oh yeah, and how about the David Marks era?
I hate to think about what's going to happen with your omission of the BB's most influential member, David Marks, from the available options. The David Marks Army may be on their way to take over DU! haha

12. Third Stone From The Sun
Oh strange beautiful grass of green
with your majestic silken scenes
Your mysterious mountains
I wish to see closer
May I land my kinky machine

Although your world wonders me
with your majestic superior cackling hen
Your people I do not understand
So to you I wish to put an end
And you'll never hear surf music again

13. The original group, but did like the Ricky Fataar/ Blondie Chaplin edition too

No mention of Glen Campbell ( after his stint in the Sandia Mountain Boys) ? Firmly in my second tier of all time favorite artists (not meant as a put down at all, btw, --I LOVE The Beachboys) right behind Springsteen, Dylan and The Clash. Brian Wilson : a genuine melodic and harmonic genius...

15. "Marcella" and "Sail On Sailor"...
...the two songs from the Chaplin / Fataar edition of the band that belong on any "best of" or "greatest hits" compilation.

They were really getting spanked by the record label during that era. Supposedly "Sail On Sailor" came into being because Warner Brothers listend to the initial tapes from "Holland" and said "We don't hear a hit..."

14. Brian Wilson writing and recording in the studio by himself.
No other "Boys" are necessary or desirable.

16. I was pretty amazed by the "Wondermints"...
...on this album:

...these guys who aren't The Beach Boys did a hell of a better job of backing Brian than the "guys who weren't the Beach Boys" in the REAL Beach Boys (if that makes any sense...all of the friends and hangers-on who filled the BB stage in later years)...
