21. .
All I can do is write about it
----------------------------------
Well this life that I've lead has took me everywhere
There ain't no place I ain't never gone
But its kind of like the saying that you heard so many times
Well there just ain't no place like home
Did you ever see a she-gator protect her young
Or a fish in a river swimming free
Did you ever see the beauty of the hills of Carolina
Or the sweetness of the grass in Tennessee
And Lord I can't make any changes
All I can do is write 'em in a song
I can see the concrete slowly creepin'
Lord take me and mine before that comes
Do you like to see a mountain stream a-flowin'
Do you like to see a youngun with his dog
Did you ever stop to think about, well, the air your breathin'
Well you better listen to my song
And Lord I can't make any changes
All I can do is write 'em in a song
I can see the concrete slowly creepin'
Lord take me and mine before that comes
I'm not tryin' to put down no big cities
But the things they write about us is just a bore
Well you can take a boy out of ol' Dixieland
But you'll never take ol' Dixie from a boy
And Lord I can't make any changes
All I can do is write 'em in a song
I can see the concrete slowly creepin'
Lord take me and mine before that comes
'Cause I can see the concrete slowly creepin'
Lord take me and mine before that comes

Lend a helpin' hand
-----------------
Oh. Now when you think the time's ___
Take a look around
'Cause babies are dying from disease
Sleeping out on the ground
People never seen the tortured eyes
From a foreign land. No
When you see somebody who's down and out
Lend a helpin' hand
You better, lend a helpin' hand. If you can
Lend a helpin' hand
Do it if you can

Oh. Every time you feed your face
Do you bow your head
Hunger kills each and every day
Won't you share your bread
If you've ever felt the pain inside
I know you'd understand
When you see somebody who's down and out
Lend a helpin' hand
You better, lend a helpin' hand. If you can
Lend a helpin' hand
Do it if you can

Oh. Every time you feed that face
Do you look around
For somebody right in your own neighborhood
Sleepin out on the ground
And do some down south jukin'
If you've ever felt the pain inside
I know you'd understand
When you see somebody who's down and out
Lend a helpin' hand
Why don't you, lend a helpin' hand. If you can
Lend a helpin' hand
Won't you please lend a helpin' hand

Four Walls of Raiford
---------------------
Well them four walls of Raiford, closing in on me
Doin' three to five hard labor, for armed robbery
I had two years behind, but I could not wait the time
Everytime I thought about it, well I died some more inside

And I had stripes on my back, memories that hurt
For the only time I seen sunshine is when I hit the dirt
Diggin' ditches for the chain gang, sleepin' in the cold
Oh Lord please forgive me for I could not wait no more

And I comin' home to see you Jesus
Well it feels so close this time
Please take mercy on this soldier
From the Florida-Georgia line

When they find me they must kill me
Oh Jesus save my soul
I can't go back down to Raiford
I can't take that anymore

Well these last few years behind me
Oh Lord, have been so sad
I fought proudly for my country when the times were bad
Now they say I'm guilty, when they find me I must die
Only me and Jesus know that I never stole a dime

Well when Vietnam was over there was no work here for me
I had a pretty wife awaitin and two kids I had to feed
Well I'm one of America's heroes and when they shoot me down
Won't fly old Glory proudly, put my medals in the ground

And I comin' home to see you Jesus
Well it feels so close this time
Please take mercy on this soldier
From the Florida-Georgia line

When they find me they must kill me
Oh Jesus save my soul
I can't go back down to Raiford
I can't take that anymore

16. Just curious, what part of the world you live in?
Funny thing about Fleetwood Mac, young padawan. They used to be a VERY kick-ass blues group back in the day (60's) when Peter Green was their guitarist. They morphed into a blues rock outfit (late 60's) and as they morphed over the years, and I ended up with several of them as clients. The money still rolls in from what I can gather, and it's royalty checks form ASCAP and BMI , so I know they are being played somewhere around the clock around the world. But you NEVER hear them in So Cal, although the Dixie Chicks version of "Landslide" is just overpoweringly awesome.

But this is Fleetwood Mac back in the "Rock" days before Buckingham-Nicks
(Live at the Playboy Club!)

I think their biggest "Hit" at the time. Greene was a notorious acid casualty. Read the blurb. For some, acid opened the Pandora's box in their minds that they had kept closed.

Richmond Va

Seriously Fleetwood Mac is on every station (rock, classic, mix of the 80's 90's and today, the "we play anything" mostly geared at women I grew up with -40 year olds) all the time.

It is a running joke with myself. Click on the radio and hit the 8 stations I have dialed in 80% of the time I will find a Fleetwood Mac song.

Good for them and all but it is a bit weird.

I wasn't allowed to have Kiss records because of the SS being stylized like the SS of Nazi infamy.

This is a group with, arguably, three decent songs "Rock-n-Roll All Night" "Detroit Rock City" "Beth", and they are bitching up one side and down the other over not making the Rock & Roll HOF. Their main claim to fame is replacing Ringling Bros. as the new circus in town.

78. You obviously do not know how to play guitar....

Like 'em or not, the Beatles do have lots of relatively complicated chord progressions (no way in hell anyone could play such stuff in 6 weeks) and they were damn good musicians. Watch "Let It Be" if you want to see their raw musical talent. Not a good movie, but it shows they can play music. "A Hard Day's Night," on the other hand, is a great movie--the only movie that I've ever seen rate 100% postive on rottentomatoes.com

The Monkees were not better, but Michael Nesmith is a god.

As for the Archies....They were the Archies.

88. Actually, I do.
I've been playing guitar since 1977. I haven't heard every Beatles song in existence and six weeks was meant to be a bit of an exaggeration (I figured people would pick up on that), but I've never heard anything from them that indicated real musical skill. If such songs exist, I missed them - but have heard enough Beatles in my life to know I've heard ENOUGH Beatles in my life, so I'll just take your word for it without watching the movie. I'd rather sit through the 3D version of Jaws.

If you were offended by what I wrote, know that it wasn't my intent to do so, but nothing but hypnosis and drugs could make me appreciate the Beatles. I'd rather have needles stuck under my fingernails than hear another one of their songs.

29. Funny thread,
since rock as a creative musical genre actually died around 1973 or so, and EVERYTHING since then has been a rehashing of the twists and turns rock took in the late 60's/very early 70's.

Oh, and PLEASE don't refer to it as rock and roll. Rock and roll is a distinct subset of rock music, and has its own time frame.

Jerry Lee Lewis is rock and roll.

Little Richard is.

Chuck Berry is.

Who the fuck knows (or cares) what Rush is.

Oh, but I forgot - their drummer is like the best ever in the whole world!

And Led Zeppelin wrote all their own stuff!

(trivia time - anyone know the name of the band that Zeppelin stole the non-drum parts of "Moby Dick" from almost note for note??)

Keep on googlin' :)

Edited on Wed Apr-02-08 06:37 PM by DaDooRonRon
"Stairway To Heaven" is just Spirit's "Taurus" reworked a bit.

The "Moby Dick" steal is really obscure, and it is probably a steal of a steal, since Sleepy John Estes had the original.

Kudos for getting the rock/rock and roll distinction - they ain't even close, as you know.

62. Ahhhhhhhh
Great stuff.

That IS rock and roll.

In 1958, the execs at Atlantic decided that Ruth Brown should re-release a lot of her old stuff in a new rock and roll style, to capitalize on the buying habits of the kids.

She re-cut "Mama She Treats Your Daughter Mean" in what is known as the "fast" version.

Oh, it rocks. Yes it do.

Hard to find on CD but well worth it.

40. As a Musician and (Former studio Musician), I suppose I'll add my 2 cents here.
Ah...Just about every Group mentioned (Ok..Not the Starlight vocal Mess) has played at least ONE pretty decent song..
and some ...even a whole album.
One thing to remember, the groups back then didn't always have a "Say" in what they were going to record.
It was Dictated by the Producer/s and other higher ups.
Remember "Spooky" by the classics four?...They hated the song but were told to "Record it or hit the road"
...and the same sort of thing happened many times (in those days)
Bands nowadays have a lot more say-so in their lives...(Usually)

Now as far as Paul Anka's "You're having my Baby" AAAGGGG!! :puke: :)

Those were the ones I hated to hear coming on the radio when I was a college student.

49. How anybody can make a list of the worst music groups of the 70s and not include...
ABBA or KC and the Sunshine Band is beyond me.

67. bad boy(?) no biscuit. ABBA is fun. Ever listen to the lyrics?
Their lyrics are really dark, given their "cheery" music.

THE WHO??? The STONES?

I could agree that they suck now (sorta), but... what? Really? Kinda makes me wonder what bands you do like from the 60's and 70's. The Who and Stones practically started punk rock (with some help from the Stooges and VU), and as a bass player, I think The Ox is one of the most underrated players out there.

Seriously.

Ok, rant over. But if those are the worst, who is the best? And are those bands really worse than The Bee Gees or The Fugs? Or Sha Na Na? Barry Manilow? I could go on...

Edited to add: just in case you're confused, you (by which I mean anyone who insults The Ox) are the amps in this picture. ;)

Actually, looking at that picture, were they from some place like Scotland? The dudes I knew from Bay City in that era could kick ass. Those guys couldn't pull a beer tab.

Collectively.

a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, perhaps? :P

edit: Agreed that Freebird is way overplayed, but so is Stairway. Does that mean that Zep sucks?

I don't know if they were THE worst, but counting stuff like Starland Vocal Band or the Carpenters just doesn't seem fair.
