Have you heard any of the "multitrack masters" that are floating around on the internets? |
|
Somehow, digital copies of the multitrack recordings of a number of classic (and not so classic) songs have leaked onto the web. Each collection has a WAV file for each track of the original recording. You can hear things that were left out of the final mix, or really break down and study a mix. (I believe there are some things out there that include all the original effects settings, etc. for ProTools as well.) It's really a fascinating study of how records are made. I just compiled a list of what I've seen available:
Doobie Brothers - Long Train Running Marvin Gaye - Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me Marvin Gaye - What's Going On Marvin Gaye - Ain't No Mountain High Enough Beatles - Sgt. Pepper Beatles - With A Little Help From My Friends Beatles - She's Leaving Home Beatles - A Day In The Life Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me (Work-in-progress version...completely different lead vocal track) Def Leppard - Rock Of Ages Def Leppard - Bringing On The Heartbreak Bob Marley - Is This Love Bob Marley - Lively Up Yourself Bob Marley - No Woman No Cry Stevie Wonder - Superstition Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody Queen - Killer Queen Queen - Brighton Rock Queen - Get Down, Make Love Eagles - Take It Easy Nirvana - Marijuana Nirvana - Penny Royal Tea (Loser) Nirvana - Very Ape Nirvana - Sappy (Verse Chorus Verse) Christina Aguilera - Genie In A Bottle Jimmy Eats World - The Middle Thrice - Image Of The Invisible Thrice - The Artist In The Ambulance

I knew some of the Beatles stuff was out there but I had no idea there were that many sets of tracks available. I am going to have to see if I can grab some and mix them just to see how good of a job I can do. I never dreamed I would be able to get hold of tracks like that.
thanks for the info :hi:

3. Regarding the Beatles... |
|
I should mention that those are only 4 track masters. There's already quite a bit of stuff combined on each track, as one might expect. Still interesting to listen to.

recorded mostly on Studer 1" 4 track machines. That was some really amazing work considering how it was done. They had to get the takes right when they recorded them, no cut/copy/paste/loop to rely on...

7. There must be at least 80 wavfiles for each Def Leppard song, I'll bet. |

In the case of "Pour Some Sugar On Me," I suspect some of the tracks (particularly drums) are mixed down from a second slave machine. Or it's just possible that it was a rough early version, since the lead vocal track is so different. I haven't tried playing all the tracks at once and mixing it to see how close it is to the official version.

10. Dang it all...the Jimmy Eat World track is useless without ProTools. |
|
It's a whole bunch of individual little bits that were probably strung together from the best performances, and it needs ProTools to put the whole session together.

And possibly some private torrent sites. That's where I found the Jimmy Eat World one as well.
