Left Behind

My frustrated coat lapped over my arm, I flip
through envelopes, gum wrappers and pennies, looking
for the keys I am always losing. Shaking my purse, I hear the chime
of metal on metal, but really it’s just a few dimes.

When I was ten, I watched my mother kneel
sobbing in the grave-grass, searching for her keys.
My black patent-leather shoes lost their shine, covered
in the dirt that hides a hundred faces. Twenty minutes of crawling,
crying through a web of last words—not sad, but scared
of being lost among the stones
and left behind.

This is life now—a tumbled heap of ashtrays, receipts,
an impatient suitcase and a legacy of things that I lose
when I’m trying to get up off of my knees
and leave.
