8. As we move into Spring, you could do what I did |
|
For the first few weeks I was down there, I was living with a woman who had picked me up at Trpoical Isle a few months earlier, right under my Mom's nose. No, really, I was.
Alas, she turned out to be a bit of a neat freak, and so I was soon cast adrift and searching for housing. This was in June of 1989.
It wouldn't be as easy now, obviously, but I ended up in the Carrollton neighborhood, above Tulane and Loyola, where, just as in any college town, there are vacancies that open up over the summer. (And the extension of the St. Charles streetcar is supposed to reopen soon!) Even if it was temporary, you'd have the summer to poke around areas that might be cheaper, such as Mid-City.
And what, may I ask, is your field, for which there is such demand in the home town? I have a sort of standing offer to use my unique talents and prespective to assist the rebuilding effort in any way possible, but obviously, no one has yet taken me up on this.

2. Post in the Louisiana forum |
|
also try checking out the local paper, the Times-Picayune. DUer Swamp Rat is a notable N'awlins resident. Ask him.
I've visited for Mardi Gras a few times but never lived their. Have fun! Laissez le bon temp roule!

Look at the Algiers Point neighborhood. it withstood Katrina better than most parts of the region, it has a good supply of rental housing, there's ferry service to the CBD/French Quarter, and it's an architectural gem.
The downside is that the housing market has gone bonkers, so what used to be a cheap area might now be considerably more expensive.
One of the nice things about living in NOLA was having a good , inexpensive public university, the University of New Orleans. They've got very good programs in music, business, urban planning, and engineering, on both the undergrad and grad level.

4. If I was looking to buy a house there ... |

I'd look for high ground. :scared: http://www.gnocdc.org/maps/elevation.htmlAmong all the usual house-hunting factors, of course. Best of luck! :hi:

http://www.neworleans.com/forum/index.phpor http://www.nola.com/forums/I LOVE New Orleans. What specifically are you looking for? I posted in the Louisiana forum that New Orleans is like a smoky mistress; you can smell her in your hair after you leave and feel a little punch drunk. If you live here she gets into your blood and makes you a little crazy. Peace; Amelie

7. NOLA has the bestest blogosphere in the solar system |
|
try out a few of these: http://toulousestreet.wordpress.com (by a former DUer, who served as sort of the "gateway blogger" for me) http://adrastos.blog-city.comhttp://theamericanzombie.blogspot.comhttp://b.rox.comhttp://gentillygirl.comhttp://peoplegetready.jockamofeenanay.comThey all link to each other, forming a sort of virtual streetcar line that you can use to get around Cybertown. Enjoy!

Wow, first post here in a long time. I can't believe my account still works.
There is also a Yahoo group founded by people who followed the NOLA.Com forum and tired of all the trolls.
If I can help you out just drop me a line to markfolse AT rocketmail DOT com.
