a question to my fellow DUers |
|
reading janesez's post about people getting shot... one of those were people talking loudly on the cell phone...
Now I know there are places NOT to talk on your phone ie: movies, theater, wakes.... Are there places OK to talk on your phone ?
I was thinking the other day as I was sitting at my favorite chair at my favorite bar that when my phone rings I go outside to answer it.... and then I thought why?? When everyone else around me is talking, laughing etc, why do I have to go outside... It's not like I'm going to bother anyone....
so is that acceptable?? or not?? and what other places are OK???
not bashing janesez at all.... I agree a lot of people talk in inappropriate places..
It just reminded me of my thought

1. My husband is British... |
|
so he's brought my attention to just how damned loud we Americans are. Basically, as a Brit, he strives to NEVER have a conversation overheard in public. Ever. Either on the phone or with another person. Now that I'm in the habit of it too, I really like it, and tend to look askance at people who are perfectly willing to let me overhear every word of their conversation, although he/she is ten seats away from me on the train. :eyes:
Thanks for the shoutout. :D

10. I don't have a cell phone, either |
|
but it does seem that when people are in public talking on them they seem to be very concerned with the person on the other end being able to hear them, therefore they YELL their half of the conversation.
I think if you are in a crowded, noisy bar and everyone else is talking loudly there would be no problem carrying on a cell phone conversation.
I also think, though, that calling someone from a store when you have a question for the other person on the other end about groceries to get, or if you just need to talk to someone about something is okay, too. But when you get to the register when you might have to interact, it is probably polite to hang up.
Of course, I am one of those that just dont let many things other people do bother me. It is really none of my business what somebody is doing. If it doesnt hurt me in anyway, why should I care?

3. lost, I think that if you can... |
|
talk on your cell in public in a discrete manner, then there is nothing wrong with it.
However, it all depends on set and setting.
In a loud place such as a bar, with everyone else doing it, it may be ok.
However, in most public places, it is really annoying, because people do not know how to be discrete and polite. :hi:

4. Well, if I'm in a bar and get a call, I would probably |
|
go outside, because I would not be able to hear the person who is calling me. If I did stay in, it would be rude to the person calling me.

14. If your volume doesn't exceed the volume of others, of course it's okay. |
|
But if you're yelling into your phone on the Metro and other people have to hear about what you're having for dinner, what a jerk so-and-so was at Steve's party or what gifts have been bought off of your registry, don't be surprised if the other passengers turn your phone into a suppository. At least that's what SHOULD happen.

15. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't. |
|
With cell phones we're going to irritate someone unless we excuse ourselves to hide in a closet. I've seen wonderfully discrete cell talkers right at their restaurant table and obnoxious conversationalists one table over. People glared at the person with the phone and ignored the loud mouth. Who knows!
