The resulting score suffers from the schizophrenia one would expect given its abrupt creative shift, but proves greater than the sum of its parts thanks to a series of impressively epic orchestral themes. Jones' opening main theme is the most effective music here, capturing the mystery and primal wonder of James Fennimore Cooper's frontier milieu in ravishing detail. While he wisely relegates synthesizers to the background, Edelman vaults his electronics front and center, and his glossy modern sensibilities are a poor fit with the subject matter. Original Review: Director Michael Mann chose to employ two composers for this film, and it is Trevor Jones' track 'Top of the World' that is the highlight of this excellent album. Jones composed tracks 1-9, and his fully orchestral style is much in evidence. The main theme, a grandiose, powerful melody played on magnificent brass appears throughout, 'Elk Hunt' is an atmospheric, exciting action cue with wild, dancing strings and hearty percussion, and 'The Kiss' has a wonderful fiddle undercurrent which gradually gives way to a romantic string and woodwind rendition of the theme. Randy Edelman's section is less impressive than Jones', being primarily synth and guitar-based rather than orchestral, but 'The Courier' is a good cue and 'Cora' contains a beautiful, sweeping love theme. There is a nice little number by Clannad which rounds out the album, but my only gripe is that the score producers didn't return to Jones' main theme to finish the score: that final crescendo really leaves you breathless.
