I am descended from the Blowasses of Temperanceville

Been doin' genealogical research on my great grandfather Louis, the notorious skirt-chasing drunkard. No one spoke of him very much so I don't have much information to go on. We finally found him in the 1880 census for Temperanceville, Ohio.

He is one month old living in a household where nobody shares his last name. The head of household is Hiram P. Blowass. At least it looks like Blowass in the flowery cursive pen of the census taker. It might be Blowace. Or Blowers. Hard to tell.

I suddenly have more sympathy for the guy. He may have been born a bastard to one of the Blowass girls and abandoned by his father.

Okay, your post tempted me to go to FamilySearch and see what the 1880 Census for Ohio said. This is what I found.

By the way, I could also look it up on HeritageQuest, which shows the actual digitized image of the page, the better to puzzle over 19th century handwriting. I have a number of stories of family names incorrectly transcribed for a database (It happened to my family at HeritageQuest, the WPA index of the Census, and at the Ellis Island website).
